OMG What a Goal! Portland Thorns goalkeeper Michelle Betos nets diving header
You’ve probably heard of “sweeper ‘keeper,” but how about “sweeper striker”?
NWSL returned from its Women’s World Cup break with a bang on Friday night in Portland.

With her team down a player and a goal as their match with FC Kansas City entered stoppage time, Portland Thorns goalkeeper Michelle Betos roamed forward into the opposite penalty box for a corner kick.
FCKC’s clearance gave the Thorns another corner, and on the second try Betos made the play that every ‘keeper dreams of.
Contorting herself to land a sensational diving header on teammate Allie Long‘s delivery, Betos watched as the ball crossed the goal line despite the efforts of her KC counterpart Nicole Barnhart, earning the home side a 1-1 draw.
The 15,000-plus in attendance at Providence Park erupted, while Betos – who is deputizing in goal while Thorns starter Nadine Angerer competes for Germany at the WWC – was swarmed by her amazed teammates within seconds of the referee’s final whistle.
Is this the greatest goal in the three-season history of NWSL? The first rival for that title that comes to mind is Australian international Lisa De Vanna‘s amazing bicycle kick for Sky Blue FC in 2013:
