U.S. Soccer Boys Development Academy clubs played one last round of matches ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, including some critical divisional battles.
U-15
In the Atlantic Division the Philadelphia Union (8-0-3, 27 points) remain undefeated after earning a pair of results over the weekend. On Saturday, the MLS affiliate took Cedar Stars Academy-Monmouth (3-5-2, 11 points) to the limit in a 3-3 draw. Ian Abbey (11’), Million Evans (52’) and Samuel Jones (66’) provided the goals for the Union while Monmouth’s goals came courtesy of Ryan Lee (24’), Dinari Simon-Ponte (32’) and Davide Caputo (72’).
While Philadelphia came just short in earning the full three points on Saturday, Sunday was a different story. Thanks to two second-half goals, the Union defeated Baltimore Armour (8-3-0, 24 points) 2-1. Marcelo Mazzoa and Quinn Sullivan gave Philadelphia the lead late with their goals in the 62nd and 69th minutes respectively. While the Armour did cut the deficit to one with Emmanuel Reyes Perez’s goal in the 80th minute, the Union defense held on to earn the win.
In a battle of Atlantic and Northeast Division sides, the New York Red Bulls (7-1-2, 23 points) made short work of their fellow MLS academy side the New England Revolution (3-3-2, 11 points) with a 3-0 win. Joshua Virgil (26’), Nicholas Rabiu (41’) and Serge Ngoma (62’) all scored for the Red Bulls. Goalkeeper Ciaran Dalton and the back line stepped up once again, earning the clean sheet. The Red Bulls have allowed just five goals all season, which is tied for the lowest among all U-15 sides in the USSDA.

PDA (8-2-1, 25 points) staved off a second-half surge from Bethesda SC (4-5-0, 12 points) on Saturday in a 3-2 win. PDA jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first half with goals from forwards Jalen Moni (18’), Nate Zimmerman (30’) and Colin Griffith (33’). While Bethesda did get themselves back in the game thanks to two goals from Bardia Hormozi (45’) and Adrien Wheaton-Schopp (55’), they were unable to find the equalizer in the final 25 minutes.
New York City FC (8-4-0, 24 points) defeated the Boston Bolts (8-2-1, 25 points) 3-1 in a battle of two of the top sides in the Northeast. Alex Palas (17’) and Simon Adjakple (30’) gave NYCFC the lead in the first half. The two are tied for the club lead in goals with six. While Boston did get one back in the form of a Lucas Vallejo Tato goal in the 52nd minute, NYCFC struck right back with Jacob Thomas (64’) sealing the result just twelve minutes later.
Met Oval (7-3-1, 22 points) found their scoring stroke in their 5-1 win over the New York Cosmos (2-7-0, 6 points) on Saturday. Damien Barker John (1’ and 75’), Tys Detiger (31’), Massimo Murania Yankowitz (46’) and William Baker (51’) all scored for Oval, a season best for the club. The Cosmos lone goal came from Marco Derlly in the 40th minute. With the win, Oval extended their unbeaten run in league play to three matches, which is tied for their best run of form this season.

Weston FC (5-1-3, 18 points) held off Orlando City SC (4-2-3, 15 points) 4-3. Weston jumped out to a 3-0 lead with goals from Moises Cuartas (22’) and Alexander Freeman (26’ and 29’). Freeman’s two goals gives him six on the season, which is the most among all Weston players. Marc Chin and David Smargon did get Orlando back into the game with their goals in the 33rd and 42nd minutes respectively. But Logan Batiste’s goal in the 65th minute put Weston ahead for good. Orlando did get back to within one with David Robinson’s goal in the 73rd minute but they couldn’t cut the deficit further.

U-16/U17
The Philadelphia Union (9-0-0. 27 points) remain undefeated after earning the 3-0 win against Cedar Stars Academy-Monmouth (2-6-0, 6 points) on Saturday. Aboubacar Camara (16’) and Luis Flores Gonzalez (47’) provided two of the three goals while the third came off of an own game from Monmouth in the 73rd minute. They made it a perfect two-for-two on Sunday holding off the Baltimore Armour (4-4-1, 13 points) by the score of 1-0. Dante Huckaby gave Philadelphia the go-ahead goal in the 23rd minute, his first of the season. With their pair of shutouts over the weekend the Union defense continues their impressive run of form. They have allowed just four goals this season which is the second lowest among all sides in the U-16/U-17 age bracket.
D.C. United (8-2-1, 25 points) held on to second place in the Atlantic after defeating PA Classics (6-3-1, 19 points) 3-0. Thomas Corral Chavez (17’), Bryang Kayp (50’), and Kevin Paredes (65’) all scored for United giving them 32 goals this season. Goalkeeper Teddy Hutman and the back line paired up to earn the clean sheet against a talented PA Classics offense.

Bethesda SC (4-3-1, 13 points) gained some ground on the top four after earning the 2-0 road win over PDA (3-6-0, 9 points). It was a pair of second half goals for BSC that proved to be the difference with Marlon Tabora Ponce and Jose Ortega scoring in the 54th and 84th minute. Goalkeeper Luca Ulrich made his first start of the season and was spotless, helping his side pick up their second consecutive shutout and third of the season.
In the Northeast Division, New York City FC (4-4-2, 19 points) had their hands full with the Boston Bolts (3-8-0, 9 points). The two teams were locked in a close back-and-forth match before New York’s Augustus McGiff scored the game-winner in the 83rd minute. McGiff now has five goals which makes him the top scorer for the club.
Beachside Soccer Club CT (6-3-1, 19 points) moved closer towards the top spot after defeating BW Gottschee Academy (3-4-4, 13 points) 5-2. Midfielders Liam Coffey (28’), Pongsa Tayjasanant (60’) and Heyson Argueta (88’) and forwards Olivier Van Spaendonck (40’) and Evan Birns (53’) all scored for Beachside. BW’s goals came from Joe Salinas (61’) and Bradley Potter (71’). Beachside’s five goal-scorers have scored 18 of the club’s 29 goals this season with Van Spaendonck leading the way with nine.
The big upset of the weekend came in the Southeast Division, where Weston FC (3-4-1, 10 points) beat Orlando City SC (5-2-2, 17 points) 1-0. Jason Bucknor scored the game-winning goal for Weston his strike in the 34th minute. The goal was his second of the season. The win snapped a three game losing streak for the club and gave them their first shutout of the season.

U-18/U-19
D.C. United (4-2-5, 17 points) snapped a six game winless run with a 2-1 win over PA Classics (2-6-2, 8 points). It was a frenetic first half for D.C. who jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Michael Gaines (37’) and Elian Nalerio (42’). Gaines’ goal was his first of the season while Nalerio has two with the club. Classics did cut the lead to one when Andrew Burkhardt scored in the 84th minute. But D.C.’s defense led by Justus Akinlosotu, Allexon Saravia and Jack Villatoro maintained their resolve and held off the visitors.
PDA (4-4-1, 13 points) continued their march up the Atlantic Division standings with a decisive 3-0 win over Bethesda SC (4-3-1, 13 points). Marcus Brenes (36’), Michael McKeown (65’) and Kyle Linhares (86’) all scored for PDA giving them their largest margin of victory on the season.

Two of the top teams in the Atlantic and Northeast did battle on Sunday as the New York Red Bulls (6-2-2, 20 points) did battle with the New England Revolution (5-2-0, 15 points). Elo Firmino put the Revolution ahead early with his goal in the 19th minute, his fourth of the season. The Revolution faced a tall task defending a very talented Red Bulls attack that has scored 25 goals this season. Revolution defenders Tyler Freitas, Brian Son, Pierre Spiegel and Nathan Metsack, and goalkeeper Austin Causey put in the leg work to earn a hard-fought three points.
New York City FC (8-1-1, 25 points) made short work of the Boston Bolts (2-5-1, 7 points), downing their Northeast neighbors 7-1. Jonathan Jimenez led the way with a brace (2’ and 45’) while individual goals were scored by Andres Jasson (30’), Joseph Koroma (45’), Veljko Petkovic (62’) and Nico Benalcazar (77’). The Bolts lone goal came from Aidan O’Sullivan in the 63rd minute.
Empire United (2-6-2, 8 points) earned their first win of the season by narrowly defeating Seacoast United (0-8-0, 0 points) 1-0. Jameson Railey put his side ahead in the 50th minute with his team-leading third goal of the season. Goalkeeper Braden MeIveney and the Empire defense combined for the shutout.
Finally in the Southeast Division, IMG Academy (4-1-4, 20 points) squeaked past South Florida Football Academy (2-3-4, 10 points) 1-0 to escape the upset on Sunday. Nico Tallarino provided the game-winner for IMG in the 62nd minute. The win extends their unbeaten run to four (3-0-1, 10 points).
