Boys’ division champions crowned on day two of 2013 PWSI Toys For Tots Tournament

By Charles Boehm

WOODBRIDGE, Va. – Tournament champions seized top honors across 10 age groups in the 2013 edition of Prince William Soccer, Inc.’s Toys For Tots tourney on Sunday, a traditional curtain-raiser for the fall youth season in the Washington, D.C. region.

Around lunchtime, SYA Excel Red showed the quality that has earned them the No. 3 ranking in Virginia from GotSoccer with a 2-0 defeat of Winchester United 94B in the Under-19 Boys division final.

Excel Red had only narrowly edged past PWSI Courage 95B Red on goal differential in the group round via a 3-0 romp over McLean 95 Titans Green almost immediately beforehand.

Reston 96 Internationals Blue found themselves fighting their toughest battles at the opening and closing of their Toys For Tots campaign. A wild 6-3 defeat of the host club’s Courage 97B Red unit on Saturday laid the foundation for an undefeated run to the U-17 Boys division championship game, only for it to end in a 1-0 loss on Sunday afternoon at the hands of VSA Heat 97 White, who did not allow a single goal all weekend under the guidance of coach Riachard Tacaraya.

PWSI’s own Courage 00 Red team surprised SYC Cyclones White (Va.) with a 1-0 championship-game triumph to claim the trophy in the top half of the U-14 Boys age group, taking revenge for Cyclones White’s 2-1 win when the teams met at the opening stage of the tournament on Saturday.

Fauquier County SC United 99 Black (Va.) claimed the U-14 Pride division title with a well-earned 5-0 championship win over Reston 99 United Blue.

FCSC’s United 98 squad enjoyed similar sucess in the U-15 Boys Pride bracket, winning the championship with an unblemished 4-0 weekend record that culminated in a 4-2 cup final defeat of BAC Invasion (Va.) on Sunday morning.

The U-15 Courage division title was claimed by VISTA FC United 98, who racked up a plus-14 goal differential on the way to a 4-0 run of their own.

Toys For Tots’ U-13 Boys Courage division was won by PWSI Courage 01 Red – currently ranked as the top U-12 boys team in Virginia by GotSoccer – as a 3-1 cup final victory over Chantilly SC Impact capped a tourney run in which coach Adam Soos’ squad scored 25 goals in four matches.
