KÖNIZ, Switzerland (Via U.S. Soccer) – The U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team scored all three goals in the first half to defeat the Switzerland U-19 WNT, 3-1, in the first of two friendlies between the teams.

U.S. U-18 WNT head coach Jaime Frias has brought a team to Switzerland that features 13 players born in 2000, which is the birth year for this year’s U-18 WNT, and seven players born in 2000, which is the U-19 WNT birth year for 2018. The roster is almost evenly split between youth club players (11) and colleges players (9).

The USA opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when a hard shot from Summer yates was deflected. Jenna Nighswonger beat a defender to the loose ball and fired past the diving goalkeeper.

Yates put the USA up 2-0 with a penalty kick conversion in the 34th minute and Nighswonger sealed it in the 38th. She received the ball after another deflection, took two dribbles into the middle and curled the ball with her left foot into the upper-right side of the net from 20 yards out.

Switzerland pulled a goal back five minutes into the second half, but the young Americans would not allow another in a game that saw them compile a 13-5 shot advantage.

The U.S. will meet the Swiss again on Tuesday, April 10 at 7 a.m. ET (1 p.m. Local) at Tissot Arena in Biel. Fans can watch a live stream of the match here.
