NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championshp first round results
The 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship first round completed Thursday, November 15 (16 for east-coasters who were watching west coast action into OT).
The tournament pits the top 48 teams from the regular season and conference championships in a single-elimination “bracket” format just like the March Madness in college basketball. The NCAA picks the teams, seeding only the top 16, each receiving a first round bye.
The other 32 programs are pitted against each other based on geographic considerations to ease travel and presumably visiting fan attendance. Every year there is controversy about which 48 teams make the tournament, as two primary polls (NCAA Coaches and RPI) typically differ, and many fans are left wondering what would have been.
