Girls Academy announces launch of U11-U12 platform ahead of 2026-27 season

Cornelius, NC — The Girls Academy (GA) has announced the launch of its U11–U12 platform, a new initiative designed to strengthen the player development pathway for young female athletes.

Set to begin in the 2026–27 season, the platform represents a significant step forward in the Girls Academy’s continued commitment to building a comprehensive and intentional pathway, from the earliest stages of development through the U13–U19 levels and beyond. By introducing players to the Girls Academy environment at younger ages, the GA is creating greater alignment across the pathway while ensuring more players have access to a development-first experience rooted in long-term growth.

This initiative reflects both the growing demand from clubs across the country and the Girls Academy’s commitment to meeting players where they are in their journey. As the landscape continues to evolve, the U11–U12 platform provides a critical bridge, one that not only prepares players for the next level, but does so in a way that prioritizes development, opportunity, and the overall player experience. This model builds on the success of the Girls Academy’s U-12 programming in the Northeast, which has been in place since the league’s inception and has consistently supported player development and pathway alignment.

A Strategic Step in Player Development

The U11–U12 platform is designed to:
– Introduce players earlier to the Girls Academy environment
– Strengthen the transition into U13 Girls Academy competition
– Provide a development-first model with reduced travel and flexible scheduling
– Ensure alignment with GA standards in coaching, game-day environment, and player experience

Competitions will focus on regional play, flexible formats, and player development, with opportunities to participate in Girls Academy regional events alongside U13 and U14 age groups.

League-Guided, Conference-Driven Model

The platform will operate through a collaborative, standards-driven approach, working closely with Girls Academy club leadership across each conference.

The Girls Academy national office will manage core operations and oversee the implementation of the platform, ensuring alignment with league standards, consistency in the player experience, and the integrity of the Girls Academy pathway.

Conference leadership will play a key role in supporting regional structure, coordination, and ongoing collaboration to ensure the platform reflects the needs of each market while maintaining the standards of the Girls Academy.

Leadership Perspective

Girls Academy Commissioner, Patricia Hughes, emphasized the importance of proactively supporting clubs and players at younger ages:

“This is an important step forward for the Girls Academy. We are listening to our clubs and responding to the evolving landscape by creating a platform that protects the integrity of our pathway while prioritizing what is best for players. This initiative allows us to extend our standards and philosophy to younger age groups in a thoughtful and intentional way.”

Girls Academy Sporting Director, Meghan Frey, highlighted the developmental impact of the new platform:

“The U-11 and U-12 ages are critical in a player’s long-term development. This platform allows us to introduce players, coaches, and families to the Girls Academy environment earlier, without adding pressure, but with clear alignment to how we develop players. It’s about building the foundation the right way and ensuring consistency across the pathway.”

Looking Ahead

Initial rollout will begin with select conferences, including but not limited to the Great Lakes, Southeast, Frontier, and Northwest regions, with additional markets expected to follow. Clubs interested in participating in the U11–U12 platform can submit an application through the Girls Academy. Final structures will be determined at the conference level in collaboration with Girls Academy leadership.
