Florida State’s Jaelin Howell and Pitt’s Amanda West earn ACC Week 1 Awards
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Pitt sophomore forward Amanda West has been named ACC Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Florida State senior midfielder Jaelin Howell has been tabbed ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
West was named the BancFirst Cowgirl Soccer Invitational Offensive MVP after scoring two goals with an assist in a pair of wins for the Panthers on opening weekend. She became the program’s all-time leader in career goals (24) in the 3-0 shutout win over Tulsa, finding the back of the net from a free kick outside the box. The preseason All-ACC selection also logged an assist on Pitt’s first goal of the season, which proved to be the game-winner against the Golden Hurricane.
In Sunday’s match against No. 16 Oklahoma State, West headed in a cross to tie the game at 2-2 and force overtime, where Pitt went on to win the contest for its first triumph over a ranked team in 13 years.
Howell helped lead Florida State to a pair of shutout victories, including a top-10 win against Texas A&M. With the Lone Tree, Colorado, native directing the defense, the Seminoles limited the ninth-ranked Aggies to just two shots in the contest and held the squad without a shot on goal.
The reigning MAC Hermann Trophy winner turned in an equally impressive performance in Sunday’s 4-0 win against Alabama, as FSU held the Crimson Tide to three shots in the contest and one shot on goal. Howell also played a part in numerous offensive chances for the Seminoles, as they outshot their opponents 31-5 on the first weekend of play.
ACC women’s soccer action returns Thursday afternoon with 13 of the league’s teams in action, including Syracuse hosting Niagara at 4:30 p.m. on ACC Network.
