Florida State forward Makala Thomas transfers to Oklahoma

NORMAN – Oklahoma soccer head coach Mark Carr announced the transfer and signing of 2018 national champion Makala Thomas, who joins the Sooners from Florida State where she appeared in 29 games.

“We are so excited to welcome Mak to our OU soccer family,” Carr said. “We believe she is a perfect fit for what we are doing here at Oklahoma and she will be expected to make an immediate impact on our front line. Mak has been a part of the FSU environment and she clearly knows what it takes to compete and win consistently at the highest levels.”

The talented forward comes to Norman fresh off a 2021 College Cup appearance where the Seminoles fell in penalties to Santa Clara in the national title. She played as a freshman on the 2018 national championship team and played 22 games as a sophomore in 2019-20 when FSU went 18-6 and made a run to the NCAA quarterfinal.

“As a program, we will tap into her experiences to make us better,” Carr commented. “She is highly competitive, driven, relentless and has pace and acceleration that will cause defenders lots of problems. We will look to her to constantly stretch defenses and press the game higher up for us.”

Thomas, a Los Angeles product, was a standout athlete at the high school level, garnering national attention in both soccer and track and field. The incoming junior was a four-time California Prep League honoree and was a four-time state finalist sprinter in California.

“Throughout the process of getting to know Mak, what really jumped out at me was her strong drive to achieve more and improve herself,” Carr added. “I know she has big goals on and off the field and I am really excited to partner with her to make sure we help her – take her strengths and highlight them, but also continue to add to her game as well at the same time.”

Thomas is set to join the Sooners this summer in preparation for the fall season.

“More than anything, I’m eager to hit the ground running as soon as I get to OU,” Thomas said. “I’m so excited to be working with Mark and his staff; I look forward to growing on and off the field, as well as working with the team and new additions to bring a conference title to Norman.
