Jefferson Cup: Spring weather arrives just in time to rescue Boys Weekend

It was a truly bipolar switch, one that encapsulated everything a Mid-Atlantic spring has to offer: From rainy, raw and near-freezing cold on Friday to bright sunshine and mild temperatures approaching 60 degrees on Saturday morning. And was long overdue for the Boys Weekend of the Jefferson Cup, which had scrambled, then soldiered on after first snow, then rain had threatened to keep the event from happening as scheduled.

Jeff Cup Q&A: Oklahoma FC 99’s Stephen Phillips on Sooner State soccer, overcoming tragedy and loud uniforms

Escaping a harsh winter and a relatively limited local scene back home, Under-15 boys side Oklahoma FC 99 have traveled halfway across the country to test themselves against some of the nation's best at the Jefferson Cup this weekend. When Schwaben AC of Buffalo Grove, Ill. last competed in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the Summer Olympic Games were hosted in Tokyo, Lyndon Baines Johnson was president and a British band called The Beatles were making waves on this side of the Atlantic with their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show.
