Lamar University women’s soccer team signs trio of international recruits

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women’s soccer program added the first additions to the 2021 signing class with three international players, two from Spain and one from Iceland.

Eva Sigurdorsdottir – Midfield – Borgarholtsskoli (Reykjavik, Iceland)

A standout that hails from Reykjavik, Iceland becomes the first student-athlete in program history to hail from the country.

“Eva is a dynamic midfielder with a very high work rate,” said head coach Steve Holeman. “She’s quick on the ball, comfortable under pressure, and her distribution is top-notch.  Her ability to make us more dynamic in the final third is something our staff is really excited about.  We can’t wait to get her to Lamar and watch her compete.”

Laura Linares – Midfield – Institut De Sales/Iowa Western CC (Barcelona, Spain)

Lineras comes via transfer from Iowa Western Community College after two years. In one season of play, she started in all 18 contests her freshman year and tallied five goals and five assists. She helped the Reivers an appearance and regional championship in the NCJAA Region XI Tournament where she earned All-Tournament Team honors and Offensive MVP.

A stellar midfielder from Barcelona, Spain, Linares has experience at all levels of soccer having played for five years within the F.C. Barcelona team. She was also a stellar high school at the Insitut de Sales in Barcelona where she was named captain in 2017 and 2018.

“Laura is one of the top players to come out of the JUCO ranks this year and we are excited that she chose Lamar to continue her education,” said head coach Steve Holeman. “She is a very intelligent player with quickness, vision, and the ability to play the final ball.  She is crafty, great in tight spaces, and also very good in the air.  Two years of college experience with a top program will make her transition to the D1 level very smooth.”

Marina Mielgo – Defender – Juan De Juni Secondary School (Valladolid, Spain)

Mielgo joins Linares from Spain, and hails from Valladoid where she started for three seasons at Juan De Juni Secondary School in the defender spot. She lead a defense that was the least scored on team the past two seasons. She helped the program to a be the regional champion in 2019-20.

“Marina is a very athletic center back who has the ability to win the ball and keep the ball,” said head coach Steve Holeman.  “She will be tough to beat defensively but will also be very instrumental in starting our attack.  She’s an all-around great athlete and soccer player who will come in and compete right away.  She will play a big role on our back line and make us better.”
