Radford University men’s soccer coach Bryheem Hancock resigns

RADFORD, Va.Bryheem Hancock resigned as head coach of the Radford men’s soccer program to take a similar job at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, a NCAA Division I school in the Western Athletic Conference.

Assistant men’s soccer coach Chris Barrett will take over as interim head coach for the program.

Barrett is in his 10th season with the Highlander men’s soccer program and was about to begin his third stint as an assistant coach prior to being named interim head coach. He has also spent the last decade as an assistant coach for the Radford women’s soccer program. Barrett even had assistant coaching stops at UNC Wilmington and West Virginia, as well as ODPs (Olympic Development Programs) in Virginia, West Virginia, South Carolina and Georgia.

In his two previous stints on the men’s side (1995-98, 2006-10), Barrett helped lead the Highlanders to 81 wins, including 32 Big South wins, and a Big South regular season title. He has worked primarily with the goalkeepers at Radford in the past, with two earning all-conference honors. Barrett himself was also an all-conference goalkeeper for the Highlanders and played four seasons for Radford (1991-94).

The Highlanders season is slated to begin at USC Upstate on Feb. 21, 2021.
