George Washington men’s soccer plays Binghamton to 0-0 draw

WASHINGTON (Via George Washington University) – The GW men’s soccer team played Binghamton to a 0-0 draw on Monday afternoon in the Colonials’ home opener a the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.

On a hot summer afternoon in the District, GW (1-0-1) and Binghamton (1-0-1) played a close first half, taking three and four shots, respectively. Sophomore Thor Arne Höfs tallied a pair of saves in the opening stanza.

The Colonials posted an aggressive second half, out-shooting the Bearcats 7-2. Senior Garrett Heine nearly broke the stalemate in the 69th minute when he fired a free kick from the top of the box to the upper half of the net, but Binghamton’s keeper tipped the ball over the crossbar for the save.

The Buff and Blue came close again in the 86th minute, when senior Tobi Adewole’sheader soared just high.

Both squads took one shot in the first overtime period, but neither met their mark. In the second overtime period, the Bearcats got off three shots, but Höfs stopped the only true threat for his third and final save of the game. The Colonials tallied one shot in the 108th minute, but the attempt went wide as GW and Binghamton wrapped the day in a deadlock.

The Colonials return to action on Saturday as NJIT visits the GW Soccer Field for a 2 p.m. match as part of Kickin’ It at the Vern weekend.
