SoccerWire is publishing Q&A articles with recently-committed players who have Featured Profiles in the SoccerWire Recruiting Directory. The series will allow players to share their stories on the college recruiting process, travel and high school soccer, and their passion for the beautiful game.

In this edition we will showcase Coda Jones, who has committed to play NCAA Division I soccer in 2025 at Michigan. Jones plays travel soccer in the ECNL for Solar SC .

SoccerWire: What made you decide to verbally commit to Michigan?

Coda Jones: Approaching the recruiting process, I knew that I wanted a school that had high academic standards, a strong focus on their athletic programs, as well as a school outside of Texas to broaden my exposure. Also, after carefully exploring my options, I felt that the combination of the campus, the coaches, and the team was the best fit for me to continue to grow and develop on and off the field.

SW: What was the recruiting process like and what did you learn about yourself while going through it?

CJ: If I had to sum up the recruiting process, I’d say it was a huge learning experience. It was a bit overwhelming but very rewarding and I’m grateful I had the opportunity to participate in it. Throughout the process, I learned what was really important to me and being able to communicate my needs. Additionally, I learned that the process doesn’t always go how you think it should go, so keeping an open mind, doing lots of research and going with your gut are important in the decision making process.

SW: Growing up- who was your favorite soccer player and your favorite team?

CJ: I’ve always been a huge Messi fan, therefore, I supported Barcelona heavily. However, I’m proud to say as I’ve grown older, Arsenal has been my #1.

SW: What are your favorite subjects in school and what do you think you would like to study in college?

CJ: English is my favorite subject in school. As for college, I’m still undecided, however, my plan is to study something that utilizes my creativity.

SW: Outside of soccer, what clubs, organizations, and/or jobs are you involved in?

CJ: Although soccer is a huge part of my life, I’m proud to say that I’m involved in various other things as well. In school, I’m a part of the National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, and the Black Student Union. Outside of school hours, I actively participate in volunteer programs such as Team Give & Go.

SW: What are your favorite pair of cleats that you have ever owned?

CJ: Recently, I’ve been wearing the Nike Tiempos. I love wearing them, they are extremely comfortable and flexible to my movement as a defensive midfielder.

SW: What has your experience been like playing for Solar? How does it feel to wear the captain’s armband?

CJ: Playing with Solar has been an incredible experience and essentially all I’ve known. It’s a highly competitive organization and it’s been great to be a part of a winning culture. My team specifically pushes each other to showcase our best effort on the field and being a captain of this team for several years has taught me to always think bigger than myself and my needs. It’s been a pleasure to see the results of our hard work, dedication, and focus be recognized on a national level.

SW: How has social media and being a SoccerWire Featured Player helped you with the college recruiting process?

CJ: Social media and being a SoccerWire featured player has really helped me share my passion for soccer in such a public space as well as helped me get to know other players across the country. SoccerWire has been one of my go to sources for learning about the recruiting process. It’s been amazing to be a SoccerWire Feature Player because it has provided so much exposure for me and access to coaches.

SW: If you could give one piece of advice to a younger player that wants to play forward at a high level what would it be?

CJ: I’ll always emphasize to trust in yourself and abilities. If you put the work in now, the benefits will pay off later. Don’t compare your journey to others. Everyone’s path is different. Focus on your development to achieve your goals and how to bring more value to the team that you’re on.

SW: Is there anyone that you would like to give a shoutout to who has helped you both on and off of the field?

CJ: There are so many people who have helped me on and off the field. I’d first like to show appreciation to my parents. None of this would be possible if they didn’t believe in me and do the things necessary for me to be the best version of myself. I’d also like to shout out my Solar coaches and amazing teammates who constantly push me on the field. Outside of team training, I’d like to give thanks to my individual trainers, Coach Cruz and Coach Lee, who have not only spent time working with me in key areas, but who have also been great listeners and motivators.
