UCLA trio sweeps Pac-12 Player of the Week awards

UCLA swept the Pac-12 Player of the Week awards, with Mia Fishel earning her first Offensive Player of the Week award this season, Lauren Brykcy winning her second straight goalkeeper award, and Kylie Kerr receiving her first career Defensive Player of the Week honor.

Fishel, a junior forward from San Diego, scored the game-winning goal in all three of UCLA’s shutout victories this week. She started the week by scoring the game-winner in the sixth minute in a 3-0 win over CSUN on Monday. On Thursday, she scored both goals in the Bruins’ 2-0 win at San Diego for her fifth career multiple-goal game, and on Sunday, she netted her fourth game-winner of the season in a 2-0 win at San Diego State. Fishel has scored four of UCLA’s last seven goals and three of its last four and is tied with Reilyn Turner for the team lead in scoring with seven goals, four game-winning goals and 14 points. This is her second career Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week award.

Brzykcy, a senior from San Clemente, Calif., repeats as Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week and earns her fourth career award. Brzykcy recorded three shutouts this week to help the Bruins finish the non-conference slate with a perfect 8-0 record. She increased her shutout streak to 687 minutes and has not conceded a goal all season, holding a 0.00 goals against average. She is one of just four starting goalkeepers in the nation to have not allowed a goal this season. Brzkycy has recorded six solo shutouts and one shared shutout, moving into a tie for seventh on UCLA’s career lists for shutouts (17) and victories (29).

Kerr, a junior from Alamo, Calif., has had a breakout season at center back, leading the Bruin defense to three shutouts last week and holding both San Diego and San Diego State to just three shots each. The Bruins averaged just three shots on goal allowed in the three victories this week. Kerr also picked up her first career point with an assist on the game-winning goal at San Diego. This season, UCLA has gone 8-0 with seven consecutive shutouts and conceded just one goal in the season opener. Kerr, who had totaled just 144 minutes of action in her previous two years, leads the 2021 team in minutes played with 647.

UCLA has won at least one weekly award in four of the season’s five weeks, with five different athletes earning weekly honors. This is only the seventh time ever and the first time since 2018 that all three awards have been won by one school.
