PWSI Toys for Tots 2012: Coverage Central

Another PWSI Toys for Tots Tournament is underway in Northern Virginia this morning and the soccerwire.com staff is onsite all weekend this and next. Families have packed into the fields around Howison and Hellwig Park to root on their budding footy stars in the opening weekend, which features only Under-9 through U-12 play.

Follow along here as Roger Gonzalez provides updates from the cup events, and tracks down stories surrounding the teams that have traveled from near and far to take part in this rewarding competition for a great cause.

The cause? Everyone has brought a toy to donate to the Toys for Tots foundation, so while wonderful things are happening on the pitch, an even better display is being put on off the field.

Keep up with the schedules and scores here, and visit the Potomac version of soccerwire.com here frequently to check out some of the things we have planned for this weekend.

As always, you can follow us on Twitter at @TheSoccerWire, and the tournament at @PWCTournaments, for updates.

As we get ready to catch some more action, be sure to let us know how great of a time you are having at the tournament. It was an exciting day for many reasons, from the thrilled fans, ambitious teams, entertaining games and more.

Soccerwire.com had you covered with many stories from day one, for you all to enjoy. We learned a bit about a young star, the Hispanic community, the goal of the tournament and even got to sit down with a Marine, who explained the true meaning of the competition.

Here are some of the top stories of the day…

Toys For Tots tourney offers vital pre-season test, supports good cause
Some parts of the Washington, D.C. region slow down dramatically in August, as certain sectors of the federal government are curtailed or closed up entirely. But the area’s soccer scene is usually a hive of activity as clubs, players, officials and many others ramp up for the fall season, and few are busier at the moment than Northern Virginia heavyweights Prince William Soccer, Inc., whose Toys For Tots tournament will help more than 200 teams tune up for the fall campaign when it kicks off this Saturday.

Latino community makes strong showing at PWSI Toys for Tots tournament
As the 2012 PWSI Toys for Tots tournament kicked off in Prince William on Saturday, fans braved raining conditions to cheer on exciting preseason soccer on the fields, but there was another story taking place at the tournament aside from any score.

U.S. Marines support PWSI’s Toys For Tots
“We try to give back,” PWSI executive director Mike Yeatts told soccerwire.com prior to this year’s event. Working through the National Capital Toys for Tots campaign to help reach that goal.

Young Honduran talent Iker Bustamante shares the ball at Toys for Tots event
Iker Bustamante is only 11 years old. You can tell he is a young gun just by looking at his short stature and baby face. On the soccer field, however, he plays beyond his years.

Visit the official tournament schedule for all the results here.

A lot of the teams have caught the eyes of the fans thus far, two more so than others. One is an electric U-11 squad. In U-11 Boys White division play, LMVSC ’01 Boys Red of Mount Vernon, Va. has been the most dominant team so far, winning 8-1 in its first game and 11-1 in its second. Star midfielder Iker Bustamante has been one of the top players in the competition, simply dominating with his creativity on the ball and speed to get in and out of defensive players. The whole team is filled with talent and moves the ball around like a bunch of little professionals. It’s quite the sight to see.

If you want to see this stellar team play on Sunday, head out to Hellwig Park at 10:45 A.M.

Another team that has been just as good is CYA Cesena ’00 of Chantilly, Va., who is 2-0 with 16 goals scored and only one against in the U-12 Red division. The team will be in action again on Sunday 10:45 A.M. at Howison Park against MPS U12 Boys Silver of McLean, Va.

Stay connected at the PWSI Toys For Tots Tournament Websites: SoccerWire.com Page | Official Website

See you Sunday!

–

Day 2 wrap, first weekend

The 2012 PWSI Toys for Tots tournament reached the end of its first weekend today, with champions determined in the Under-9 through U-12 age groups.

Despite rainfall on both days, it has been quite the success, from a competition standpoint and even more so from donations to the event’s namesake charity.

He walked from the parking lot at Howison Park with his a chair in hand and family all around. Approaching the field, he paced up a little hill to get a look at the entire complex.
