Pac-12 champion Washington welcomes nine new Huskies for 2023

The University of Washington men’s soccer program is welcoming nine new members to the team, including six freshmen and three transfers.

Meet the newest Huskies:

HARRISON (HARRY) BERTOS

DEFENDER | BEDFORD, MASS. | MLS NEXT 

Bertos travels across the country from Bedford, Mass. to join the 2023 freshman class. While playing for his high school team at Brooks, Bertos led his team to a New England Championship with 19 goals and 20 assists on the year. He was named the 2022 New England MVP and Defensive MVP; he was also selected to the all-region team and All-New England first team. Bertos is a 2022 Bimbo All-American and a United Soccer Coaches All-American selection. While playing for his club, he led them to the 2022 MLS Next Cup Playoffs. Bertos’ greatest soccer memory is winning the New England Championship his senior year. Not on the pitch, Bertos participates and volunteers in multiple different foundations at his school for kids with disabilities. While at UW, Bertos plans to major in communications.

Betos on Why Washington: “I chose UW because I really liked the coaches and the professional environment around the team.”

LEVI BIEBER

GOALKEEPER | TACOMA, WASH. | SEATTLE SOUNDERS ACADEMY

Bieber joins the Washington squad from Tacoma, Wash. where he attended Stadium High School and the Federal Way Internet Academy. Bieber played club soccer for Seattle Sounders Academy, where he helped his team win the regular season league and the GA Cup. Bieber’s favorite soccer memory is traveling and spending time with his teammates. Outside the pitch, Bieber loves to do outdoor activities like fishing and skiing. Bieber is still undecided on his major plans while at Washington.

Bieber on Why Washington: “To compete and develop as a soccer player while studying at an academically renowned university with great people.”

MANI DIOP

DEFENDER | KAOLACK, SENEGAL | AKRON

Diop comes to Washington following a season at Akron. Last season, Diop made 13 appearances and recorded 194 minutes. His first career assist came against Wright State. Diop played a season-high 45 minutes in the Zips’ win over Chicago State. Prior to his collegiate career, Diop played with the Philadelphia Union Academy, appearing in numerous matches for Union 2 in the USL.

Head coach Jamie Clark on Diop: “We have a rich history of producing central defenders that go on and play in the MLS, and we think Mani has all the tools to follow in the footsteps of those guys who have played here over the past few years. Mani is a physically gifted central defender who can also really play. He has all the tools to match up with any attacker in the country, as he’s fast and strong and can really cover ground. What separates him from some other top defenders, is that he’s also a very good passer of the ball, and will help us as we build attacks.”

SHEEHAN GANGULY

MIDFIELDER | BELLEVUE, WASH. | EASTSIDE FC

Ganguly comes to UW from Bellevue where he attended Interlake and played with the Eastside FC. While playing for his club, Ganguly was named ECNL First Team and helped his team win the Region 4 Washington ODP Championship. Ganguly’s greatest soccer memory is playing futsal on the streets of Spain. Ganguly has two brothers who also play soccer. While at Washington, Ganguly intends to major in computer science.

Ganguly on Why Washington: “Growing up in Seattle, I’ve always supported UW and feel honored to now represent the community. With its top-notch soccer program, along with its stellar academics, UW is the perfect place for me to pursue my goals.”

BRYAN ILIOHAN

FORWARD | NIEUW-WENNEP, HOLLAND | CAL BAPTIST

Iliohan makes his way to Montlake after the past three seasons at Cal Baptist. During his time with the Lancers, Iliohan was twice named First Team All-WAC and Third Team All-West Region in 2022. In his career, Iliohan has 24 goals with nine assists in 51 games. In 2021, Iliohan led the team and the conference with 13 goals scored and recorded a total of 27 points. He recorded hist first collegiate hat trick at UNLV that season and netted seven goals over a four-match stretch. In 2022, Iliohan led the team with seven assists and was second in goals, shots and points. He scored three game-winners including one against top-seeded Air Force in the WAC Tournament.

Head coach Jamie Clark on Iliohan: “Bryan is a very good center forward with a nose for goal. Over the past two seasons, he’s scored close to 25 goals, and will be counted on to bring that presence to our attack. He’s a physical presence, but has very soft feet and is mobile enough to get in behind. We are excited to get a season with Bryan as we think it could be a big one”

PETER KINGSTON

MIDFIELDER | KIRKLAND, WASH. | SEATTLE U

Kingston comes to Montlake from just down the road at Seattle U. Kingston played in 42 games in his three-year career with the Redhawks, starting in 34 of them. In the 2022 regular season, he finished with two goals, two assists, and 11 shots on goal over 13 games. Kingston was named 2022 All-WAC First Team, 2022 All-WAC Tournament First Team and 2022 All-Far West Region Third Team. Kingston played for Seattle Sounders FC Academy from 2014-2019, helping the team win the 2016 Youdan Trophy, the 2017-18 USSDA Championship and the 2017-18 GA Cup. Kingston’s greatest soccer memory is winning the national championship in 2018 with the Seattle Sounders Academy. Kingston is intending to major in real estate while at Washington.

Kingston on Why Washington: “I chose UW because I wanted to be apart a great soccer program/family and go to a school that is academically challenging.”

CHARLIE KOSAKOFF

FORWARD | SAN DIEGO, CALIF. | SAN DIEGO SURF

Kosakoff comes to Washington from San Diego, Calif., where he played high school soccer at Torrey Pines. Kosakoff helped his team win a CIF Championship, leading his team in goals and being awarded player of the game. When not competing with his high school team, Kosakoff also participated with club team San Diego Surf. With his club, they won the Surf Cup championship, with Kosakoff being the leading scorer for his team. Aside from soccer, Kosakoff also loves to play golf and his greatest soccer memory is winning high school playoffs in front of his own school. While at Washington, Kosakoff plans on majoring in business.

Kosakoff on Why Washington: “I chose UW for the great education, campus and of course the soccer program. The most important thing for me was the culture I saw built around the team and togetherness.”

CONNOR LOFY

MIDFIELDER | KIRKLAND, WASH. | CROSSFIRE PREMIER

Lofy makes his way to Montlake from O’Dea High School in Seattle. Lofy played club soccer for Crossfire Premier, leading his team to an ECNL National Championship and two ECNL Conference Championships. Lofy earned many accolades with his club including ECNL All-American, First-Team All-Conference twice, and ECNL Player of the Year. Lofy’s greatest soccer memory is winning the ECNL National Championship. While at O’Dea, Lofy was school Vice-Captain, a student ambassador and member of the National Honors Society. Lofy is planning to major in business while at Washington.

Lofy on Why Washington: “I wanted to come to a big school that has a great balance of academics and athletics.”

CHAD SOVDE

MIDFIELDER | BELLEVUE, WASH. | PACNW SC

Sovde makes his way to Washington from Newport High School in Bellevue. Playing for his high school team in 2022, Sovde had 26 goals and 8 assists, leading his team to a conference championship, district championship, and eventually state quarterfinals. Sovde was named the KingCo conference offensive player of the year. For his club team, Sovde accrued 24 goals and 10 assists in his last two seasons and helped his team to two Surf Cup Championship victories while earning ECNL first-team twice. His greatest soccer memory is playing in Barcelona. Outside of soccer Sovde enjoys golf, fly fishing, mountain biking and snowboarding. While at Washington, Sovde plans on majoring in marketing.
