ECNL – San Diego 2012 Coverage Central

San Diego, Sat. March 31, 2012, 7 p.m. PST–Slammers FC and Mustang SC finished in a 3-3 tie in the U-18s to cap off a great day of soccer at the San Diego Polo Club. Slammers went down 2-0 in the first half, only to rally to tie the match at 2-2, and rallied again from a one-goal deficit to tie the match at 3-3.

Joe Owen, coach of Mustang SC, said it was a match befitting of two of the best U-18 teams in the U.S. He said 15 of his 18 players have committed to college for the fall, and he said he is looking for placements for the other three girls. He said his team is just getting back in the swing of things after a three-and-a-half month layoff for high school season, and hopes to hit its stride in the next couple of months.

Mustang leads the Northwest Conference with a 9-0-2 record and is seventh in National Flight A at 6-2-2, while Slammers is first in the SoCal Conference at 8-1-0 and is 4-2-2 and 10th place in National Flight A.

Here are the scores for each of the age groups from throughout the day. March 31, 2012, 11 a.m. PST–Live from the San Diego Polo Club, it’s the Elite Clubs National League National Showcase event, the second-to-last one before the 2012 ECNL National Championships that takes place in June in Chicago.

The San Diego Polo Club, specifically in the north San Diego suburb of Rancho Santa Fe, has been open since 1982 and from June through September, hosts polo matches. However, until Monday, it is host to the national showcase, with 38 clubs from across the United States coming together not only to fight for National Flight placing, but with college coaches everywhere, it’s a chance to, as they say, showcase their skills before some of the top coaches in the country.

Action is taking place from U-14 through U-18 age groups on 18 fields throughout today, tomorrow and Monday.

It’s already lively, as goals are flowing freely and play is quick on the field on a cool, overcast Saturday morning. Early play is focused on the U-15 and U-16 age groups.

Freestate Soccer Alliance U-16 coach Will Morris laughed as he said he expected warmer temperatures and sunny skies, but with just 13 available players, he has had to make some adjustments, still coming away with a 1-1 tie against Irvine Strikers. Morris said his goal for the team was to get seven points out of the weekend. With the tie, Freestate will have to win its next two matches to reach that goal.

During the U-15 match between De Anza Force and Challenge SC, more than a dozen college coaches, including ones from Oklahoma, Missouri, Princeton, Hawaii, Nevada and Oregon, were watching. But they’re out in force carrying their chairs around the 18 fields keeping their eyes on the plethora of players.

Look for more updates here throughout the weekend.
