U.S. U-17 Women’s National Team places 3rd at friendly tournament in Sweden

VARBERG, Sweden – The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team tied 1-1 with Germany in its final match of a friendly tournament in Sweden.

The USA won the penalty kick shootout that followed the draw, per tournament rules, but Germany won the competition with seven points. The USA and Spain both finished third with six points, but Spain defeated the USA earlier in the tournament and had a slightly better goal difference. Sweden lost all three games and finished fourth.

In the other match of the day, Spain downed Sweden, 4-0.

The USA got on the board in the 34th minute as Amelia White dribbled to the end line and cut a pass back to Simone Jackson, who finished with her fight foot from close range.

If the USA had held that lead, they could have potentially won the tournament on the head-to-head result (although Spain ended up on six points as well and beat the USA on the second match day), but the Germans tied it in the 60th minute and the match would go to penalty kicks.

Allyson Sentnor, Devin Lynch, Tatiana Fung and Simone Jackson converted for the USA while U.S. goalkeeper Neeku Purcell saved Germany’s last kick to seal the win.

U.S. head coach Tracey Kevins called up 20 players for this tournament. All players in the competition must have been born on or after January 1, 2003, which is the age cut-off date to be eligible for the 2020 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup to be held in India. Nineteen of Kevins’ call-ups were born in 2003 with Sentnor the only one born in 2004. Sentnor leads the team in goals this year with six. Jackson’s goal was her fourth of the year in international play.

In the round-robin competition, the teams got three points for a win and zero for a loss, but if a match was tied at the end of regulation, the teams went to penalty kicks. In the case of the tie and then penalty kick shoot-out, the winning team got three points and the losing team got one point.

Sweden will be hosting the 2020 UEFA European Women’s Under-17 Championship in May of next year.
