No. 4 Maryland men’s soccer routs Hartford 5-0 on Monday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (Via University of Maryland) – The No. 4 Maryland men’s soccer team erupted for five goals in a 5-0 rout of Hartford in the home opener Monday night at Ludwig Field.
Sophomore transfer Gordon Wild scored two goals while Sebastian Elney, George Campbell and Jorge Calix each added one as the Terps rebounded from a 1-1 draw at No. 16 UCLA Friday night. D.J. Reeves and Eryk Williamson chipped in with a pair of assists each.
Wild struck first, netting his first goal as a Terrapin in the eighth minute. Silva served a long ball down the sideline and Wild finished from eight yards for the early 1-0 lead.
Elney put the Terps up 2-0 at 11:53 after a beautiful exchange. Chris Odoi-Atsem worked the sideline, finding Williamson whose header found Elney’s head and a finish to the near post for the goal.
Wild made it a two-pack with a score in the 53rd minute off deflection in the box with help from assists from Williamson and Reeves.
Campbell created his own penalty kick opportunity in the 69th minute after he was tripped up in the box. The junior’s subsequent goal gave the Terps a commanding 4-0 cushion.
Calix finished off the scoring for Maryland. Reeves’ cross found the sophomore from 10 yards out for the left-footed strike and a 5-0 match.
“It was a great effort after the UCLA match with the travel and the overtime game,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “We came out on fire and scored two really nice goals. We brought the energy and got a lot of players into the game. It was a complete team effort, getting five goals this early in the year against a good team and getting the shutout, I couldn’t ask for more.”
Maryland hosts rival Georgetown on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Ludwig Field.
