Weast’s goal lifts Mary Washington women’s soccer past St. Mary’s in CAC Tourney first round
Sophomore Lizzie Weast scored in the ninth minute of play, and the defense held up to give the University of Mary Washington women’s soccer team a 1-0 victory at St. Mary’s College in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday. The Eagles will advance to the CAC semifinals on Tuesday at York College of Pa.
Weast scored her fifth goal of the season unassisted at 8:15, and from that point on, neither team could find the back of the net. The Eagles held a 9-7 advantage in shots, and led, 5-0, in corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Sara Armor made three saves in goal for UMW.
“Everyone stepped it up today”, said Weast. “We worked hard and fought for each other.” “We made some minor adjustments from the last time we played them”, said UMW head coach Corey Hewson. “The kids brought a lot of heart and energy today… It was a well deserved result.”
UMW will look to reverse its second straight overtime loss from the regular season against York, as the Eagles lost, 1-0, in overtime at St. Mary’s, and fell at home to the Spartans, 3-2.
