Borkey’s OT winner lifts VMI men’s soccer over Howard 2-1

WASHINGTON, D.C. – For the first time in series history, the Virginia Military Institute picked up a win over Howard University in Washington, D.C. thanks to an overtime goal from sophomore Travis Borkey, giving VMI a 2-1 non-conference win on the road.

Borkey’s tally, which came in the 92nd minute, was the first game-winning goal of his career and second strike this season. The tally came after Bison keeper Jordan Austin misplayed the ball, allowing Borkey to push home the golden goal.

The win was the first win in overtime for VMI since the Keydets knocked off UNC Asheville 2-1 on Oct. 15, 2005. Saturday’s win over the Bison was also VMI’s first overtime win on the road since a 3-2 victory over The Citadel on Oct. 28, 1995 in Charleston, S.C.

Junior captain Blake McCauley found the back of the net in the 37th minute, playing in a header on an Alex Hartman corner kick. McCauley’s tally knotted the game a 1-1 for halftime after Howard’s Frederick Todd III scored in the 20th minute on a long shot from over 40 yards out.

Sophomore Alex Guerra got the win in goal for the Keydets after turning aside four Howard attempts. The Bison (1-15-0) out-shot the Keydets 15-7, but VMI put three of its seven shots on goal, scoring on two of those attempts.

Aaron White was VMI’s leader in shots, taking three and putting one attempt on frame. McCauley and Borkey were the only other VMI (3-13-1) players to put shots on goal, each finding the back of the net. Todd III led the day in shots, taking four attempts and scoring on his lone shot on goal. Raynard Storey managed three shots, putting one on frame but was stopped by Guerra.

Each team took four corner kicks, with both sides taking two in each half. Fouls were nearly even, with Howard whistled 10 times and VMI nine, including six in the second half. VMI was called offsides four times while the Bison were off just twice. Three cards were issued during the match, with two going against VMI and the third against Howard.
