PWSI Icebreaker Tournament set for 19th edition

The 19th edition of the PWSI Icebreaker Tournament in support of US Youth Soccer’s Kickback Program is set to run over two weekends once again from March 21-22 (U-9 to U-12 boys) and March 28-29 (U-9 to U-19 girls and U-13 to U-19 boys).  The past several years has seen an average of 450 teams compete over the two weekends with age groups going as many six divisions deep, with another strong turnout expected in 2015.

+2014 PWSI Icebreaker Coverage

In 2014 the final day of the PWSI Icebreaker was cut short due to inclement weather, though most teams were able to play their full three-game schedules. The 2014 field included a strong group of US Youth Soccer and US Club Soccer teams, including State Cup and Regional champions. With over 500 teams it was the event’s largest ever, with teams coming from New York, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maryland and host state Virginia.

Much like the Toys for Tots Tournament in the fall, PWSI adds a community-service angle to this event, in partnership with the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s Passback Program. Every player who takes part in the Icebreaker is asked to bring used soccer equipment to registration, or to any game site for collection. At the end of the tournament, the equipment will be collected and distributed to those in need.

Once again in 2015, the majority of the divisions will play in Prince William County on more than 15 Bermuda Grass fields and 15 synthetic turf fields.  The application deadline for the 2015 PWSI Icebreaker is Friday, February 20, 2015.
