We know the world’s two best players. But who’s No. 3?

As far as world soccer goes, Lionel Messi is simply the best.

The Argentine’s ability appears to be matched by none, and his scoring touch is on pace to be the best in history.

Behind him lurks Cristiano Ronaldo, who seems to be scoring every game for Real Madrid. But who comes after that?

The leading candidate for the world’s third-best player may soon find himself back with the rest of the pack with what could be a serious injury. That would be Welsh star Gareth Bale, who stars for London-based squad Tottenham. But Bale was injured in the Spurs’ 2-2 draw with Basel on Thursday.

“He rolled on his ankle. At the moment there is a lot of pain, but hopefully not as bad as it could have been,” his manager, Andre Villas-Boas, told BBC Sport.

Bale, 23, was taken off on a stretcher after falling heavily on his right ankle. Immediately after the injury, there were concerns that he could miss the remainder of the season, but AVB expects him to just miss a few matches as the squad aims to earn a UEFA Champions League spot next season with a top four finish in the English Premier League.
