Video Highlights: College Cup semifinal Georgetown vs. Maryland becomes barn-burner
Score Alert: Georgetown 4, Maryland 4 (Georgetown wins PK shootout 4-3, advances to College Cup Final)
Third-seeded Georgetown defeated No. 2 seed Maryland 4-3 in a penalty shootout after the teams tied 3-3 after 110 minutes of full time plus two overtime periods in Friday evening’s College Cup semifinal in Hoover, Ala.
The Hoyas received a hat trick from Steve Neumann and got one more from Brandon Allen, scoring two goals in each half and holding the Terps red-hot offense scoreless during overtime to eventually outlast the top-rated offense in college soccer.
Despite trailing 4-2 with less than 17 minutes remaining in the second half, the Maryland offense found late magic as they have all season long and did every bit of work they needed to put themselves in position to win the match. The Terps manufactured two late goals to tie the match as ACC Player of the Year Patrick Mullins found his 17th goal of the season in the 74th minute, and Christiano Francois evened the match just four minutes later.
Georgetown will play the winner of No. 12 Creighton vs. No. 16 Indiana Sunday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. in the College Cup Final.
