Undefeated teams look to preserve strong starts to fall 2012 WAGS season

By Jimmy LaRoue

Lee-Mount Vernon SC Patriots will look for their third win in three matches in Washington Area Girls Soccer League play when it takes on Herndon Curve (Sun. 9 a.m., Herndon HS Stadium Field) in High School Division 1 action.

While most coaches talk about how difficult it is to win from week to week, LMVSC Patriots coach Ahmad Sasso told soccerwire.com something different.

“So far, so good,” Sasso told soccerwire.com. “I’m very optimistic…You never know what happens in soccer…It might be difficult for us to lose a game.”

Though both wins were by 5-0 margins, he said the win last week against FPYC Wildcats Blue was closer than the scoreline indicated.

Against Curve, LMVSC Patriots figure to have a tough match on their hands, as the Curve finished in second place this spring in High School Division 1, finishing with a 5-2-1 record and ending its season on a three-match winning streak.

Curve, who did not play a WAGS league game last weekend, lost its opening WAGS match 1-0 to Chantilly Revolution 95 on the opening weekend of the season.

Two one-win teams face off in the division, as CYA Hotshots 95 plays NVSC Jr. Majestics 95 (Sun. 9 a.m., Hellwig Park #7), while two more teams search for their first wins of the season as ASC Premier Gold takes on FPYC Wildcats Blue (Sun. 11 a.m., Bies Park #1).

In U-15 Division 1, second-place FSC Xtreme has a chance to vault over first-place Herndon Freedom (2-0-1) this weekend as it plays a pair of matches, including an encounter against each other Sunday (5 p.m., Herndon HS Stadium Field). First, though, FSC will have to face ODFC Revolution (1-1-1).

A battle of undefeateds highlights U-14 Division 1 WAGS play Saturday, as VYS Thunder Black (2-0-0) plays ASA Azzurri (2-0-0) (5:30 p.m., James Madison HS). ASA Azzurri will have a quick turnaround to play again Sunday at 9 a.m. versus VYS Thunder Gold (1-1-0) at Dunn Loring #1. VYS Thunder Black also has to turn around and play Sunday, as it plays against SAC Premier Blue (2-0-2) at 4:30 p.m. at Idylwood Park.
