STORRS, Conn. (Via University of Connecticut) – A first half goal from Stephanie Ribeiro (Pawtucket, R.I.) put UConn on top in Friday’s 1-0 victory over Northeastern. UConn starts off the season 1-0 after the home opener, while Northeastern drops to 0-1 out of the gate.

UConn came out strong in the first minutes of the game, outshooting Northeastern 6-0. Junior Danielle Gottwik (New Port Richey, Fla.) produced an early scoring chance, but the ball missed just wide of the net.

Senior Rachel Hill (Rollinsford, N.H.) followed up Gottwik’s chance with an opportunity of her own when she kissed the ball off the left post ten minutes into the game.

Ribeiro scored the game-winner in the 32nd minute. Junior Tanya Altrui (Branford, Conn.) lofted the ball into the box and Northeastern’s goalkeeper came out to challenge the play. Ribeiro flicked the ball into the air, over the head of NU’s keeper and tapped it into an open net.

Northeastern fought back in the second half with a couple scoring chances, but could not find the back of the net. UConn outshot Northeastern 23-10 overall, getting off 14 shots in the first half alone.

Senior goalkeeper Emily Armstrong (Collegeville, Pa.) saw all 90 minutes and finished with four saves for her first win and shutout of the season.

In their next match, the Huskies will host Boston University on Sunday, Aug. 21 at 1 p.m. at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.
