U.S. U-23 WNT shuts out Sweden 2-0 in Nordic Tournament opener
SARPSBORG, Norway (Via U.S. Soccer) – The U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team defeated Sweden 2-0 in the first match for both countries at the Women’s U-23 Nordic Tournament.
U.S. head coach B.J. Snow took a roster to Norway that features 22 professional players, including 12 from the National Women’s Soccer League. Six NWSL players got starting nods along with four European-based players and Clemson University senior defender Samantha Staab.
Rachel Hill of the Orlando Pride opened the scoring in the 43rd minute after she cut off a Sweden pass about 10 yards above the top right corner of the box. She dribbled at goal and took a right-footed shot which Sweden goalkeeper Emma Holmgren initially saved but could not hold. Hill collected her own rebound and finished into the far post.
Sky Blue FC forward Imani Dorsey sealed the game with a goal in the 81st minute. North Carolina Courage forward Darian Jenkins received a ball on the right flank and was able to penetrate with pace. She then crossed the ball on the ground through the penalty box to Dorsey who met it around the penalty spot to strike a first-time a shot into the bottom right corner.
The U.S. roster features six players who have seen time with the full U.S. Women’s National Team, including five who have earned caps: Houston Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell (3 caps), Dash midfielder Haley Hanson (1), Washington Spirit forward Ashley Hatch (1), Sky Blue FC forward Savannah McCaskill (6) and Spirit midfielder Andi Sullivan (10).
All of them saw action except for Campbell. Hatch, McCaskill and Sullivan got starts, along with goalkeeper Casey Murphy, the USA’s starter at the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, who has also seen training time with the senior side but has not been capped. Murphy, who plays in France at Montpellier, picked up the shutout as the USA allowed Sweden just one shot during the 90 minutes.
In the other game, England defeated Norway, 1-0, putting the USA on top of the standings after the first match day.
