No. 20 American men’s soccer falls to Gonzaga 3-1

WASHINGTON (Via American University) — Senior Dale Ludwig scored for the American University men’s soccer team late in the first-half, but two early goals by Gonzaga and a late tally gave the Bulldogs a 3-1 victory on Friday afternoon at Reeves Field.
American (2-1-2) played a tough defensive contest, but the Zags scored early in the first half on a rebound goal by Sam Olson. Jalen Cristler was credited with the assist.
In the 16th minute, Ben White served a cross that found the head of Austin Giftopolous to put the visitors up 2-0.
The Eagles then responded in the 27th minute on a cross by senior Kibu Mbaluku over to Ludwig whose initial shot was stopped by Gonzaga keeper Ben Willis.
The Zags held a 9-3 edge in shots after the first and eventually finished with a 12-9 advantage in chances.
Christos Michaelson netted the insurance goal for Gonzaga in the 70th minute off a one-timer pass by Jakob Granlund.
AU senior keeper Lucas Belanger made five saves in 80 minutes and was then replaced by sophomore Jordan Schreer who made one save in the final 10 minutes.
Gonzaga keeper Ben Willis made four saves.
The Eagles will conclude the Capitol Cup with Cornell on Sunday at 3 p.m.
