No. 10/14 Georgetown men’s soccer shuts out Lehigh, 2-0

The No. 10/14 Georgetown University men’s soccer team shutout the Lehigh University Mountain Hawks (1-10-0), 2-0, Tuesday afternoon at North Kehoe Field. The Hoyas used a solid offensive effort to pick up the victory and improve to 11-2-1 overall.

“Today was a workman-like effort, I thought our upperclassmen really stepped up and led the team today,” said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. “We had been getting hurt on setpieces in the past two games, and Lehigh is good on them but we handled it well.”

The Hoyas controlled the first half from start to finish. The squad had eight shots including two on goal as the team fired at will.

In the 12th minute, senior defender Jimmy Nealis (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) sent in a ball from the left side to the right post. Junior forward Steve Neumann (New Hope, Pa./Council Rock North) was waiting and volleyed it in to make it 1-0.

The Hoyas wouldn’t stop pressuring, allowing just one shot for the Mountain Hawks in the first half as GU went into the break with a one-goal lead.

Early in the second, the Hoyas struck again with freshman forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) finding the back of the net for the ninth time this season.

Senior midfielder Ian Christianson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Christian Life) passed the ball to Allen who had the 1v1 with a defender in the 48th minute and took advantage sliding it past the keeper to make it 2-0.

The Blue & Gray held on and continued to stop every Lehigh advance as the coaching staff cycled through a number of rotations on the pitch.

At the final whistle, the Hoyas had the 2-0 victory finishing off non-conference play with a mark of 9-0-1.

Georgetown outshot Lehigh, 16-4, and took nine corner kicks to the Mountain Hawks two. Sophomore goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) took the win in the net with three saves, while Ciaran Nugent posted four saves.
