IUPUI men’s soccer team welcomes 11 freshmen for 2019 season

INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI Athletics Department and head men’s soccer coach Brian Barnett announced two more additions to the Jaguars’ 2019 recruiting class, bringing the group to 11 true freshmen for the upcoming season. Barnett’s squad is coming off a Horizon League Tournament semifinals appearance and graduates six seniors off last year’s team.
“I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize Coach Bouemboue for all of the work he put in to assist me in building this strong 2019 recruiting class. I am incredibly pleased with the overall character strength of this group of young men. They are going to do a great job of continuing to build on the solid foundation of those who have come before them,” Barnett said. “The academic performance of this group is nothing short of impressive. They boast a 3.85 cumulative GPA as well as strong standardized test scores. Finally, our coaching staff has done a great job in identifying a strong group of young men that possess the ability to compete immediately, as well as lay the foundation for the future success of the program and will be committed to the relentless pursuit of excellence as students, athletes and people during their IUPUI careers.”
Below is a rundown on the Jaguars’ most recent additions, along with quotes from Barnett.
Tylin Broaders – McCordsville, Ind./Mt. Vernon
6-2 I Forward I FC Pride
Awards & Honors
-Led the Hoosier Heritage Conference with 21 goals as a senior, earning First Team All-District and unanimous First Team All-Conference honors
-Named MV’s Offensive Player of the Year as a senior
-Graduating with an Academic Honors Diploma
Barnett on Broaders:
“Tylin was one of Central Indiana’s leading goal scorers over the course of the 2018 high school season. He is going to develop into a strong attacking wide player with the ability to threaten goal in a variety of ways, in particular on flank service.”
“Tylin has been a valuable key in MV’s success. He is a leader on the field and off. Off the field, he volunteers at the local elementary school working with younger kids. He is a fine young man and I am excited to see what he is able to accomplish in college.”
Matt Mayhew, Mount Vernon Boys Varsity Coach, Sporting Indiana FC Club Director
“I expect Tylin will show he has the ability to play in a number of roles and show his ability to contribute heavily in games and training right from the outset of his college soccer career. He is a great team player and has a willingness to learn, along with an infectious personality, which I’m sure will endear him to the IUPUI student body. I look forward to seeing him thrive on the next step of his journey.”
Tony Massie, ECNL Boys Director, FC Pride
Wesley Sutherly – Casstown, Ohio/Miami East
6-4 I Midfielder/Defender I Ohio Galaxies
Awards & Honors
-Earned seven varsity letters in soccer, football and basketball while at Miami East High School
-Set new school records for the most assists in a game, season and career
-Helped Miami East to its first ever district championship game
Barnett on Sutherly:
“Wes has a high ceiling to develop over the course of his time with us due to his overall level of athleticism, strength, size and technical ability.”
“I first saw Wes at our tryout last June and he stood out immediately, mainly due to his size. He didn’t hesitate to step in when given the opportunity and took control of the game. He took people on, was aggressive going into tackles and just looked comfortable. His size, speed, skill and overall knowledge is what makes him a great player. He’s a nice kid and comes from a good family. He’s coachable and will be a good teammate to his peers.”
David Wright, Ohio Galaxies FC 00 Elite
“Wes is a fantastic player and fantastic individual. He is one of the hardest workers on and off the field. He was a great team leader and helped many of the younger players by guiding them in the right direction. I cannot count how many times he stayed after practice to work with some players or even come early to train. He is always a joy to be around and it was a pleasure coaching him. I believe IUPUI is a great school and I am proud to see that he decided to pursue his college career there. It will be a great fit for him both academics and athletics.”
