Dr Pepper Dallas Cup Gordon Jago Super Group Day 3 Recap

Bracket A

In Bracket A, the C.D. Guadalajara “Chivas” and Coritiba match concluded on Tuesday after weather from Monday night postponed the game. Coritiba controlled the action in the early going. Henrique Vermudt scored in the 2nd minute to get the Brazilian team off to a good start. His teammate Yuri Rocha tacked on a second goal in the 16th minute. Chivas’ Bryan Haro grabbed a goal back in the 25th minute to make the match 2-1. Coritiba’s Matheus da Cunha and Talysson Machado added two unanswered goals in the 58th and 64th minute. Chivas kept clawing back though. Bryan Haro netted his second goal of the match in the 76th minute and Jose de Jesus Gonzalez Munoz scored a late goal in the 86th minute to keep their comeback dreams alive. In the end, they were unable to equalize as the match ended 4-3 in favor of Coritiba.

Coritiba currently sits atop the table with 4 points. With a win over Manchester United Wednesday, Coritiba will secure a spot in the semi-finals. If Manchester United wins and Chivas loses or ties to Real Salt Lake, United will reach the semis. Wins by both Manchester United and Chivas will lock both teams at 6 points and the semi-finalist will be determined by goal differential. Chivas will advance if they win and Manchester United and Coritiba draw.

Bracket B

In Bracket B, Mexico’s CF Monterrey and Israel’s Maccabi Haifa squared off. In the 9th minute, Monterrey’s Juan Machado scored the game’s opening goal to make it 1-0. That would be the only goal of the first half as the two teams went into halftime. In the second half, Maccabi Haifa’s Shadi Masarwa leveled the game at 1-1. It was the first goal the Maccabi Haifa side had scored in the tournament. The match was knotted at 1-1 until the 90th minute when Juan Machado tallied his second goal of the game and secured the 2-1 win for Monterrey.

FC Dallas currently sits in first place in Bracket B due to their impressive goal differential. With a win over Maccabi Haifa on Wednesday and a CF Monterrey loss or tie, FC Dallas will be through to the semi-finals. If FC Dallas and CF Monterrey both win, goal differential will decide who will move forward. If Everton wins and FC Dallas loses or ties, Everton will be back in the Super Group semi-finals.

Bracket C

Eintracht Frankfurt faced off against Toronto FC needing a win to stay alive in Bracket C. Eintracht started the game with a 4th minute goal scored by Mahato Takahashi. The game went into the half 1-0. In the second half, Eintracht continued to control the ball and apply pressure. The German side was granted a penalty shot early in the second half, but Nils Herdt hit the post on his PK which proved to be a critical miss. Toronto FC took advantage in the 64th minute when a cross into the box landed at the foot of Shaan Hundal, who bashed the ball into the back of the net to level the score. The match ended 1-1.

Tigres and Red Bull Brasil both earned a point after a 2-2 draw at MoneyGram Park. Red Bull Brasil’s Danilo Albuquerque scored first in the 27th minute to put his team up 1-0. In the 60th minute Vitor Vieira added a second goal for Red Bull Brasil. The prideful Tigres team was not going to give up though. In the 79th minute, Luis Bonilla netted their first goal of the match. With time dwindling down, Tigres’ Juan Sanchez added the equalizer to make the game 2-2.

Bracket C will be a two team race as Tigres and Toronto FC have cleared some space in Bracket C. The winner of their match on Wednesday will be guaranteed a spot in the semi-finals. If the match results in a draw, Tigres will move on, having scored more goals in group play.
