Columbus Crew Soccer Academy teams battle for playoff spots as Development Academy season winds down

COLUMBUS – Both the Under-16 and Under-18 Crew Soccer Academy and CSA Wolves sides were in action over the weekend – as well as several other teams throughout the Crew Youth System – as the U.S. Soccer Development Academy season winds down.

At the U-16 level, the Academy went 1-1-0 to pick-up three points, while the CSA Wolves earned a point in Minnesota with a 0-1-1 record on the weekend. In the U-18 division, CSA won both of its matches in St. Louis and the CSA Wolves split in Minnesota to go 1-1-0.

The CSA U-18 and U-15 Pre-Academy boys’ sides played a series of matches against Chicago Fire youth teams. In all, the Pre-Academy went 3-1 against the Fire Youth on the weekend. The boys were in attendance at Toyota Park on Saturday to watch the MLS match between the Black & Gold and the Fire.

Crew Youth is gearing-up for the inaugural Crew Cup and Showcase May 18-19, welcoming over 80 teams and 50 college coaches. Tryouts for Crew Juniors and Crew Soccer Academy start the week of May 28.

As summer approaches, Crew Youth has announced its most extensive camp lineup in 2013, with over 40 camps this summer including one-day clinics in Crew stadium, five-day community camps and a Residential Camp. Check http://www.thecrewyouth.com for more details.

U-16

On Saturday, April 20, CSA topped the Saint Louis Scott Gallagher Metro squad 1-0 behind William Bayemi’s goal. The U-16s fell 2-1 on Sunday, April 21, against Saint Louis Scott Gallagher Missouri as Devyn Etling tallied in the loss. After earning three points on the weekend, the U-16s are currently in eighth-place in the USSDA Central Conference. A playoff berth is still possible with seven matches remaining. CSA hosts the Chicago Fire Academy on Saturday, May 4 at 3:30 p.m. ET and Chicago Magic PSG on Sunday, May 5 at 12:30 p.m. ET. Both matches will be played at the Crew’s training facility in Obetz.

In first-place of the Central Conference with a playoff spot clinched, the CSA Wolves U-16 squad drew Shattuck-Saint Mary’s 1-1 in Minnesota on Saturday, April 20, as Kosti Moni scored for the Black & Gold. On Sunday, April 21, the Wolves suffered just their third defeat of the season after falling 1-0 to the Minnesota Thunder. The CSA Wolves travel to Cleveland this weekend to face the Internationals on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. ET at Pinnacle Sports Complex.

U-18

Austin Foor and Andrew McKelvey scored to lead the CSA U-18s past the Scott Gallagher Saint Lewis Metros 2-0 on Saturday, April 20. The U-18s followed up Saturday’s performance with a 1-0 victory on Sunday, April 21, thanks to John Schumann’s tally. Nick Ciraldo’s back-to-back clean sheets put the U-18 squad on spot away from Wild Card position on the Central Conference table with seven matches to play in the season. CSA hosts the Chicago Fire Academy at 1:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, May 4 and Chicago Magic PSG on Sunday, May 4 at 10:00 a.m. ET at the Crew’s training ground in Obetz.

The U-18 CSA Wolves atoned for a 3-0 loss to Shattuck-St. Mary’s on Saturday, April 20, with a 1-0 win against the Minnesota Thunder on Sunday, April 21. The Wolves currently sit in seventh place in the Central Conference standings as they travel to Cleveland to face the Internationals at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at Pinnacle Sports Complex.
