Belmont signs defender John Bannec on transfer from Indiana

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont University men’s soccer officially welcomed junior transfer defender John Bannec to the program, head coach David Costa announced Friday morning.

“We are excited to add John to the team this spring,” said Costa. “During his time with Indiana University, he was a part of a team that went to two Final Fours and he has brought that same winning mentality into training here. We expect him to make an immediate impact in our team.”

Bannec comes to the Bruins as a transfer from Indiana, where he was a part of two Big Ten Regular Season Championships, two Big Ten Tournament Championships and two College Cup appearances.

The Bloomington, Ind. native also succeeded academically for the Hoosiers as a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. He also boasted a grade-point average of 3.83 in his time at Indiana.

Bannec appeared in five matches for the Hoosiers over the last two years, as he was redshirted in his first season with the program.

In his prep career, Bannec was named First Team All-State, First Team All-Conference Indiana and All-Area Player of the Year. Additionally, he helped lead Bloomington South High School to four sectional championships, two regional titles and a Conference Indiana championship. Bannec is the son of Amy and Eric Bannec and has two siblings, Reid and Audrey.
