Philadelphia Union sign 19-year-old Anton Sorenson as Homegrown Player

CHESTER, Pa. – Philadelphia Union announced that the club has signed left back Anthony “Anton” Sorenson to a Homegrown Player contract.

The 19-year-old youth international joined the Union Academy in 2019 and becomes the 18th Homegrown player in Union history. Sorenson will join the Union on a two-and-a-half-year contract with a club option for a third and fourth year.

“Anton is a promising young player and a natural left-footed defender that will be a valuable addition to our backline,” said Ernst Tanner, Union Sporting Director. “He is an attacking-minded outside back who looks to play forward quickly in transition. His mentality, aggression, and physical skills provide a platform for Anton to become a valuable player as he develops further.”

Sorenson joined the Union Academy system in 2019 when he joined the U17 squad. The YSC Academy player spent the 2020 season playing for Union II in the USL Championship. He made his debut for the team on Aug. 2 and would log more than 1,000 minutes in 12 appearances for the club (11 starts). He scored his first professional goal for Union II on Sept. 17 in a 4-0 victory over Loudoun United.

Sorenson is also making an impression with the United States Youth National Team. He was first called up to a U-14 36-player camp roster in 2017 and was later called up to the U-16 team three times, making his debut on April 24, 2018. He was a member of the 2018 U-16 team that finished third in the Torneo Delle Naizoni in Italy alongside current teammate, Jack McGlynn.
