College of Charleston men’s soccer hires Kyle Johnston as assistant coach

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Kyle Johnston has been named assistant coach for the College of Charleston men’s soccer program, as announced by head coach Keith Wiggans.

“I am very excited to add Kyle to our staff. He is energetic and driven to improve our goalkeeping group with his modern-day vision,” Wiggans said. “His positive and encouraging attitude will make an immediate impact on the program.”

Johnston joins The College from his alma mater, the University of the South: Sewanee, where he served as an assistant coach and the goalkeeper’s coach. During his tenure with the Tigers, the men’s soccer program had its best season in 17 years in which Johnston was a part of the Southern Athletic Association Coach/Staff of the Year. He guided the Tigers’ starting goalkeeper to earn All-Conference honors for the first time in his collegiate career.

Prior to coaching, Johnston was a four-year letterwinner at Sewanee where he was a four-time All-SAA athlete and a one-time All-Region player while serving as a caption for his junior and senior seasons. In addition, Johnston has playing experience in the USL.

A native of South Florida, Johnston received a bachelor’s degree in international and global studies and currently resides in Mount Pleasant.
