ECNL Mid-Atlantic Conference Recap: November 5-6, 2016

ECNL Mid-Atlantic Conference clubs FC Virginia, McLean Youth Soccer, Charlotte Soccer Academy and NC Fusion were in action over the weekend in the U-15, U-16 and U-17 age groups as the Virginia sides visited North Carolina.

U-15

Chesapeake Division leader Charlotte Soccer Academy (8-0-2) extended its season-opening unbeaten streak to ten, earning a pair of 2-1 home wins over McLean Youth Soccer and FC Virginia. Caileen Almeida and Lauren Huffstetler assisted each other on Charlotte’s goals against McLean. Meanwhile, goalkeepers Paige Nurkin and Amy Joyner combined to hold their opponents to just two goals on the weekend, playing behind’s the team’s strong back line.

NC Fusion (2-2-6) picked up four of six possible points, defeating FC Virginia 3-1 on Saturday before playing McLean to a 1-1 draw on Sunday. Goalkeeper Madison Howard and the Fusion defense held their opponents to just a single score in each game, as Payton EubanksCaroline Gardner and Sophia Faircloth led the balanced attack.

McLean (1-5-3) earned a point in the 1-1 defensive battle against Fusion, behind a solid defensive effort and a goal by Jordan Felton.

U-16

McLean Youth Soccer (8-0-1) still has not lost through nine regular season matches, after picking up two more wins on the road this weekend. Leyah Hall-Robinson netted four goals and assisted one more over the course of the two wins, a 4-1 win over Charlotte Soccer Academy and a 4-0 result against NC Fusion. Rebekah Myers was making plays throughout the weekend, assisting three goals and scoring one of her own. Angela Caloia also had a hand in multiple goals, scoring one in each game. Goalkeeper Cayla White and the McLean back line held their opponents to a lone goal over the two games.

FC Virginia (5-2-2) split a pair of road matches in North Carolina, defeating NC Fusion 5-1 before falling 1-0 in a defensive battle against Charlotte Soccer Academy. Five different players found the net in FCV’s win over Fusion, and four players recorded assists. Alexis Theoret and Olivia Migli led the attack with a goal and an assist each, as goalkeeper Ella Gantman and the FCV defense held Fusion to just one score.

A lone goal by Charlotte’s Claire Broderdorp was the difference in Sunday’s match, as CSA shut down FCV’s potent offense. The win allowed Charlotte to split the weekend, bringing the team’s record to 5-2-3, which is currently good for the No 1 wild card seed.

U-17

McLean Youth Soccer (9-0-0) maintained its unblemished record in league play, shutting out two more opponents during the team’s trip to North Carolina. McLean followed up a 1-0 blanking of Charlotte Soccer Academy with a 10-0 rout of NC Fusion.

Defender Jasmine Bryant set up Annie Sorando for the game-winner against Charlotte, before Sunday’s explosion by the McLean attack. Bryant netted four goals in the match, while Aleigh Gambone (2 goals, 2 assists), Jada Newton (2 goals, 1 assist) and Sophie Tran (2 assists) each had a role in multiple goals as well. Caitlin Moon and Kendall Robertson also contributed an assist apiece in the rout.

With the two additional clean sheets, goalkeeper Melissa Hoffheins and the McLean defense still have allowed just four goals through their first nine matches.
