WASHINGTON (Via George Washington University) – Junior MacKenzie Cowley scored two first half goals on Sunday as GW women’s soccer blanked East Carolina, 3-0, in the 2015 home opener at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.

The Colonials (2-1-0) tallied their second shutout of the season as redshirt-sophomore Miranda Horn and senior Ellen Conway combined for four saves on the day. East Carolina (1-2-1) took nine shots on the day but was unable to find the back of the net.

Cowley struck early on for GW, netting the first goal of the game – her second of the season – at the 10-minute mark, after receiving a pass from senior Kristi Abbate. Cowley then dribbled to the right side of the goal and shot a liner to the upper left corner of the net to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead.

In the 24th minute, Cowley followed through on her own header off of senior Brooke Stoller’s corner kick to get the ball passed ECU’s goalkeeper to score her second of the game and put the Buff and Blue up by two.

In the second half, the Colonials drew a penalty kick in the 80th minute to set up senior Emily Brown for the second goal of her career. Brown perfectly placed the ball to the right side of the goal as ECU’s keeper dove left to give GW a 3-0 lead that would last through the rest of the match.

The Colonials return to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 4, as they welcome Drexel to the GW Soccer Field for a 3 p.m. start.
