Va. State Cup gets underway with curious blend of blowouts, nailbiters

By Jimmy LaRoue

Fifteen Virginia Youth Soccer Association State Cup games this weekend were decided by a single goal, but another 10 were games decided by four goals or more.

The lopsided margins included a 13-0 win by Loudoun 98B Red over Chesapeake United SC Premier in Under-13 Boys, a 10-0 win Northern Virginia SC Junior Majestics over Chesterfield United FC Puma 98G in U-13 Girls and an 8-0 win by Arlington Boys & Girls Club (ABGC) Samba over Loudoun 97G Black in U-14 Girls.

Two games were decided in overtime, a 2-1 win for Southwestern Youth Association (SYA) Cardinals 98G Red over Reston United 98 in U-13 Girls and a 2-1 win by ABGC Xtreme98 White over Stafford Revolution 98G Blue, also in U-13 Girls.

State Cup continues next weekend, with the majority of games taking place Saturday, Apr. 21, and just one game scheduled for Sunday due to one of the teams being in the Region I Colonial League, with those games taking precedence over State Cup games in the same way State Cup games supersede VYSA league games, according to the VYSA website.
