Villanova’s Mark Fetrow hired as head coach of Drexel men’s soccer program

PHILADELPHIA Mark Fetrow has been named the head coach of the Drexel University men’s soccer team. The announcement was made by Director of Athletics Maisha Kelly. Fetrow is just the seventh head coach in the more than 75 years of Drexel Men’s Soccer.

“I am excited to announce Mark as the head coach of the Drexel Men’s Soccer program,” said Kelly. “Mark had an exceptional collegiate career at Penn State, professionally, and has garnered tremendous experience in the coaching ranks. His success in coaching throughout the region and building competitive rosters is evident. Mark is committed to developing talented soccer players and preparing student-athletes for success in their academic pursuits and as individuals within their communities. We look forward to Mark starting his next chapter in West Philadelphia as he builds off the recent accomplishments of our men’s soccer program.”

Fetrow comes to Drexel from Villanova University, where he was a member of the Wildcats’ staff since 2016. Fetrow was elevated to the role of Associate Head Coach in 2019 after serving as an assistant coach for three seasons on the Main Line. Villanova advanced to the BIG EAST semifinals in 2021 and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats defeated Vermont in the opening round for the school’s first NCAA Tournament victory.

“I am thrilled to accept this opportunity as the Head Men’s Soccer Coach at Drexel University,” said Fetrow. “I would like to thank Maisha Kelly, Nick Gannon, and the rest of the search committee for believing in my vision to cultivate not just skilled athletes, but also compassionate and resilient individuals. Through the commitment of honesty and integrity, our staff will focus on developing well-rounded student athletes while maximizing their potential on the field, in the classroom, and serving the Philadelphia community. I am excited to work with our current players, foster relationships with Drexel alumni, and collaborate with faculty and staff to continue a legacy of triumph and growth.”

A West Chester, Pa. native, Fetrow served as the top assistant at West Chester University before his stint at Villanova. Previously, he was a graduate assistant at Penn State, his alma mater, for a season. During his playing days at Penn State, Fetrow was a four-year starter for the Nittany Lions and played in two NCAA Tournaments. He was a 2009 Academic All-Big Ten selection. As a rookie in 2008, Fetrow was a unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team and was named to the Big Ten Championship All-Tournament Team. He was selected by the Vancouver Whitecaps of Major League Soccer in the 2011 Supplemental Draft.
