U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team set roster for international matches in Sweden

CHICAGO – The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team continues its preparation for qualifying for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup with a trip to Gavle, Sweden, from May 24-June 3.

U.S. U-20 WNT head coach Michelle French has called up 20 players for the trip that will see the USA square off against Sweden’s U-20 Women’s National Team on Friday, May 31 and Sweden’s U-23 Women’s National Team on Sunday, June 2, the same day the U.S. WNT will face Canada in Toronto and the U.S. MNT will face Germany in Washington, D.C. as part of U.S. Soccer’s 100th Anniversary Centennial celebrations.

Both games will be played in Gavle, which is situated on the east coast of Sweden about 125 miles north of Stockholm. Gavle was the site of four of the USA’s six matches in the 1995 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The roster consists of eight collegiate players and one professional in 18-year-old Lindsey Horan, who is finishing up her first season with Paris Saint-Germain in the French First Division. With two games left to play, the teenager from outside of Denver, Colorado has scored 14 goals, putting her sixth in the league in scoring.

The remainder of the roster is filled out mostly by players who are just finishing up high school and will be attending college as freshman in the fall. Midfielder Andi Sullivan is just a high school junior.

Defender Cari Roccaro from Notre Dame is the only hold-over from the team that won the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan, but the roster does include eight players from the USA’s 2012 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup squad.

Players born on or after Jan. 1, 1994, are age-eligible for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, to be held in Canada. This 20-player roster for the matches against Sweden is made up of 10 players born in 1994 and 10 players born in 1995.
