Richmond Kickers U-17 Elite girls among local teams heading to Surf Cup in San Diego

The Richmond Kickers U17 Girls Elite will be one of six local teams in San Diego for the Surf Cup from July 27-31, to compete against the best clubs in the nation in another top rated showcase event.

The team will compete in the highest bracket versus two of the top 25 ranked teams in the nation. In pool play, the Kickers will face #14 ranked Santa Rosa United (California-North) at 12:20 p.m. ET Saturday (9:20 a.m. local time) and  Washington state champions Eastside FC (WA) at 5:40 p.m. ET (2:40 p.m. local time) and on Sunday will face the #23 ranked West Coast FC ECNL (California-South) squad 11 a.m. ET.

Should the Kickers finish first or second in their group, they would play later Sunday afternoon in a quarterfinal match. Semifinals and finals are scheduled for Monday.

The tournament is held at the San Diego Polo Club in Del Mar, California. The event is heavily recruited by college coaches from around the country and will give the Kickers girls another opportunity to continue to impress college coaches.  Currently, three players from the squad have committed while four other players were recently selected to the  Region One team.

“This group of U-17 girls continues to make the commitment to test their abilities against the best teams in the nation,” said Rob Ukrop, U-17 Girls Elite coach.  “They have consistently competed at high level national events such as the Disney Showcase, Las Vegas Players Showcase, The Jefferson Cup, and the PDA Showcase.   After a strong showing this spring, sweeping their games at Disney, Jefferson Cup, and PDA, they were excited to find more national level competition, and are excited to compete and represent Richmond in San Diego. ”

The Kickers won’t be the only team from the region making the trek to San Diego.

• Loudoun Soccer 95G Red will be in the Girls U-17 Gold bracket and will play against West Coast FC United of California, Tualatin Hills United SC Sodium of Oregon and Weston FC 95 Premier Black of

• In Boys U-18, AC Bethesda will take on Rovers Youth Academy of Kentucky, along with California teams Fullerton Rangers and Sacramento United America in bracket play.

• In U-15 boys action, Arlington Impact Red will play three California-based teams, Pac San Jose 97 Indios, Real So Cal White and CV Manchester Academy.

• Bethesda SC Blue will play in the Boys U-16 Super bracket and take on Barcelona Texas 96/97, Washington Premier B96 Black and Marin FC 97 Blue of California.

• Bethesda SC Revolution, meanwhile, will play in the Boys U-17 Super bracket against Pateadores Black-Cantu (Torrance) of California, Diablo FC of California and OSSA 95 Green of Oregon.
