BALTIMORE, Md. (Via Navy) – Senior Jamie Dubyoski scored the game-winning goal as the visiting Navy men’s soccer team (7-5-1) won at UMBC (7-4-3), 1-0, on Tuesday evening in a non-conference match at Retriever Soccer Park.

“This was an important win for us,” said head coach Dave Brandt. “We have a big Patriot League game coming up against Colgate but every game is important to us. I was very happy with the first 75 minutes tonight, but we let them hang around and they really turned the pressure up on us in the last 15 minutes.”

Dubyoski, a Baltimore-area native who attended Loyola Blakefield High School, strengthened his career legacy against UMBC. Dubyoski has scored four career goals against the Retrievers, including game-winning tallies in back-to-back seasons.

Dubyoski, a native of Catonsville, scored both of Navy’s goals in a 2-0 win against UMBC in 2014 and also tallied a goal against the Retrievers in his sophomore campaign in 2013.

“Jamie’s goal-scoring is a key factor for us,” said Brandt. “We need him to score and it was important for him to get one tonight.”

Dubyoski has two goals this season and 22 in his career.

Navy had a serve sent in from just outside the corner of top left side of the penalty box in the 14th minute. Senor Derek Vogel made a play on the ball, but a Retriever was able to block the attempt. Dubyoski was right on the doorstep and fired in the rebound to put the Mids on the board.

Navy dominated the run of play in the first half, putting six shots on goal while limiting UMBC to zero.

Dubyoski nearly scored again just 20 seconds into the second half when his shot in the crossbar and came down, but was ruled not to have crossed the goal line.

UMBC’s first shot on goal came in the 79th minute when Malcolm Harris had a chance, but Navy goalkeeper Jackson Morgan made the save.

UMBC put on the pressure in the final few minutes of the game and a Navy defender was able to clear the ball off the goal line in the 90th minute to preserve the shutout.

Morgan made one save for his sixth shutout of the season and the 14th of his career.

Dubyoski had a game-high six shots with four being on goal. Senior Thomas Shiiba had three shots.

Navy held an 11-9 edge in overall shots and a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal. UMBC led in corner kicks, 5-4.

Navy improves to 18-5-4 all-time against UMBC.

The Retrievers advanced to the NCAA College Cup semifinals last season.

Navy will return to Patriot League play on Saturday when hosting Colgate at 6 PM. Navy is 3-1-0 in league play and is tied with Colgate for second place.
