New NCAA Division I rankings feature 14 new teams in Top 25 polls

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Via United Soccer Coaches) – United Soccer Coaches released the regional and national rankings for NCAA Division I soccer on Tuesday with Wake Forest moving up four spots to grab the top spot in the first men’s regular season poll and Stanford continuing to hold down the top spot in the second set of women’s rankings.
There was quite the shakeup on the men’s side with Wake Forest jumping four spots to No. 1 after a pair of wins, including a 2-1 season-opening win over the preseason No. 2 team, Indiana. Duke jumped eights spots from 10th to No. 2 after going 2-0. Washington made the biggest jump of the week moving from 24th up to No. 3 after a pair of shutout wins over Maryland and New Mexico. Akron stayed put at No. 4 after an 0-1-1 start and Michigan State moved into the top five after a 1-0-1 start to the season. In all, 10 new teams appear in the men’s top 25 rankings this week.
The women’s rankings saw less movement with Stanford, the defending national champions, sitting atop the poll with a 2-0 record. UCLA continues to hold at No. 2 with North Carolina moving up one spot to No. 3. Florida State moved up two spots to No. 4 with Penn State rounding out the top five. Four new teams appear in this week’s top 25.
United Soccer Coaches college rankings are an indicator of the week-to-week status of qualified programs and in no way should be used as a guide or indicator of eligibility for championship selection. To be eligible for consideration in United Soccer Coaches college rankings, a school must be a member of the United Soccer Coaches College Services Program.
The next set of college rankings will be released on Tuesday, Sept. 4 and will also include the first rankings for NCAA Division II and junior college programs.
