Navy, No. 23 Penn State men draw 1-1 on Sunday

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (Via Navy) – The Navy men’s soccer team tied #23 Penn State (1-0-1), 1-1, in a double-overtime contest on Sunday afternoon at Jeffrey Field. Along with its 1-0 win at West Virginia on Friday, Navy opens the 2015 season with a 1-0-1 record.
Penn State scored the game’s first goal in the 58th minute on a penalty kick. After a Navy foul in its defensive penalty box, Penn State’s Connor Maloney converted the PK to put the hosts ahead, 1-0.
Senior captain Derek Vogel’s header in the 69th minute evened the game at 1-1. Senior Jamie Dubyoski’s throw-in from the right side was met by Vogel, who blasted it past Penn State goalkeeper Matt Bersano.
“I’m proud of the guys for coming back,” said head coach Dave Brandt. “It’s not easy when you are behind 1-0 at State College. We made some mistakes on the play where they got the PK and we need to do better. We paid for that. But we had several other opportunities and I thought we had a few chances to win it.”
Navy carried the run of play in the match and outshot Penn State by the wide margin of 17-5. Navy also led in shots on goal, 8-4, and corner kicks, 4-3.
Navy was all over Penn State in the two overtime periods, outshooting the hosts by a 6-0 margin. Senior goalkeeper Jackson Morgan made three saves for Navy, while Bersano finished with six saves for the hosts.
Senior Thomas Shiiba took a game-high four shots.
Navy is 2-0-2 in its last four games against Top 25 opponents. Dating back to last season, Navy is unbeaten in its last 13 games at 8-0-5.
Penn State was an NCAA Tournament Second Round team in 2014.
Navy will next host Oakland on Friday, Sept. 4 at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility before hosting Ohio State on Sunday, Sept. 6. Both Oakland and Ohio State advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round in 2014.
