SoccerWire is publishing Q&A articles with players who have Featured Profiles in the SoccerWire Recruiting Directory. The series allows players to share their stories on the college recruiting process, playing the game at the international level, travel and high school soccer, and their passion for the beautiful game.

In this edition we will showcase defender Brianna Patino, who plays for Cal Odyssey in the ECNL, and has verbally committed to play for the University of Nevada in 2028.

What made you decide to verbally commit to Nevada?

I decided to verbally commit to the University of Nevada because I like the tactical style of play and how the coaches run their team. It felt like the right fit for me. Nevada staff has made me feel welcome right from the start. They believe in me, and on what I can bring to their team, which meant a lot throughout my recruiting process. I also like the area, not too far from my family, and the campus is real nice. I can truly see myself growing and playing at my full potential in the Wolfpack!

What was the recruiting process like and what did you learn about yourself while going through it?

The recruiting process was exciting and at times had some challenging moments. I began researching colleges where I could play the sport that I love while also getting my education. I tested my skills at big showcases and attended ID camps. I also had to build strong highlight videos, a resume, emailed many coaches, and at the same time had to be mentally strong to accept the rejections. I learned throughout this process to be patient and resilient. It was important for me to find a school and a coaching staff that is the best fit for me, and where I could see myself growing as a player.

How do you feel your strengths on the field will help the Wolfpack?

I play center back, and my ability to read the game and anticipate plays will allow me to help the Wolfpack defensively. I’m calm under pressure, vocal in my backline, and take pride in intercepting passes. I also love defending in 1v1 situations and shutting down the player in front of me. I am very coachable and always willing to learn new things. I hope to bring a defensive mindset, communication, and competitiveness to the Wolfpack while continuing to learn from my teammates and coaches.

What are your favorite subjects in school and what do you think you would like to study in college?

My favorite subjects are math and history. Math is fun and has clear and definite answers while in history, I like learning things from the past. In college I want to study kinesiology, and take courses in biology, physics, and chemistry. My goal is to become a physical therapist, and to one day help athletes and other people recover from injuries/surgeries so they can get back to doing the things that they love.

What has your experience been like playing for California Odyssey in the ECNL?

My experience playing for Cal Odyssey ECNL has been challenging all in the best way possible. We got promoted to ECNL a year ago and have been going up against top level players which forced me to sharpen my skills and raise my work ethic. I have great coaches and competitive teammates. Odyssey has challenged me to become a better player, and will always hold a special place in my soccer journey.

What are your favorite pair of cleats that you have ever owned?

My favorite boots ever owned were the green/mint Nike Phantom’s. They were extra special because they were a gift. I had asked my parents to get them for me, but was told they couldn’t, only to be surprised with a pair, on my birthday. They were also one of my favorite color boots.

If you could give one piece of advice to a younger player that wants to play at a high level, what would it be?

My advise is to always believe in yourself, even when it goes unnoticed. Work hard and be very hungry for what you want, because someone out there will notice.

Is there anyone that you would like to give a shoutout to who has helped you both on and off of the field?

I would like to thank my parents for the rides and financial support. To all my siblings who cheer me on. Special thanks to my youngest sister-my training buddy for years! Huge appreciation to all the trainers and coaches in my life. To my teammates and the friends that have supported my busy schedule. And to Nevada, thank you for believing in me and my potential as a student-athlete!
