U.S. Futsal National Team concludes training camp in Guatemala

The U.S. Futsal National Team wrapped up a training camp in Guatemala City, Guatemala, with a 3-1-0 record against local professional futsal teams.

U.S. head coach Keith Tozer’s squad kicked off camp in strong fashion, beating Legendarios FC 4-1 with goals from Matthew Stewart, Kevin Teneyck, Benjamin Nieves and Machel Millwood.

Millwood and Stewart also tallied against Farmaceuticos in the team’s second match, narrowly edging the professional side 6-5 in the come-from-behind victory. Farmaceuticos tallied twice before Bryan Perez, Byron Alvarez, Millwood, Stewart and Bato Radoncic responded with five consecutive goals. Patrick Healy scored the team’s sixth and final goal.

With two wins in hand, the U.S. then faced Aquasistemas on June 6, falling 2-7 to the Guatemala Futsal League Champion. Millwood opened the scoring in the 15th minute and Ptah Myers put the team ahead with a second goal after Aquasistemas tied it up. But the Guatemalan team responded to Myers goal with six unanswered goals for the victory.

The U.S. rebounded from the loss with a strong 6-3 win against La Academia F.C., with goals from Alvarez, Millwood and Angel Rivillo and a hat trick from Radoncic.

Millwood was the team’s leading scorer with four goals, scoring in each of the team’s four matches.

The U.S. will return to Guatemala at the end of June for the CONCACAF Futsal Championship, which takes place July 2-8 at the Domo Polideportivo in Guatemala City. The USA will kick off group play against Panama at 8 p.m. ET on July 2 and will then face either Canada or El Salvador at 8 p.m. ET on July 3 before meeting host Guatemala at 10 p.m. ET on July 4.

Both semifinal winners will compete in the championship match at 8 p.m. ET on July 8. The losers will play in the third-place match scheduled for 4 p.m. ET that same day, though all four teams in the semifinals will advance to the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup.
