VYSA Fall 2010 State Cup champions are crowned

The finals for the Fall 2010 VYSA State Cup are in the books except for the U16 boys, who played their semis on Sunday while the teams around them competed for the State Cup Championships.

The drama continued at West Creek Fields, and Sunday saw overtime matches and even a few blowouts. See below for all the finals results, plus the U16 boys semifinal results at the bottom.

Editor’s Notes: Potomac Soccer Wire wasn’t able to be on site Sunday, but we would love to get stories from readers who were there – please send them in! Our video partner – BC Productions – was there to record the boys U17 an U18 finals. They were also on site all day Saturday capturing three complete semifinal games. Look for some highlights soon. If you’re interested in a full copy of a game, send and email to [email protected] and we’ll put you in touch with BC Productions.

U18 Boys

12:00 PM – Field 7
Great Falls Blue 92   1 : 3   Beach FC Fire
We picked Great Falls to take this one, but Beach FC Fire continued their scoring ways and Great Falls couldn’t hold them off. The Fire scored a total of seven goals in the final weekend, and allowing just two.

U17 Boys

9:45 AM – Field 6
Annandale United FC 93   6 : 0   Herndon FC
We expected this one to be a little closer than it was (we predicted a 2-1 win for Annandale), but Annandale United still came out on top. After an early slip-up in the semifinal match, it’s not surprising that United came out and earned the shutout. What is surprising is that they won the game so handily.

U15 Boys
10:00 AM – Field 7
Great Falls Rangers 95   2 : 3   Beach FC Red 95
After blowing out SOCA Lightning 6-0 in the semifinals, we expected Great Falls Rangers to take the State Cup title with ease. Beach FC had other ideas, however, and edged out the Rangers for the win.

U18 Girls
10:15 AM – Field 8
McLean Azul   6 : 0   Beach FC Red
The Azul completed their return to glory with a shocking 6 goal blowout of Beach FC Red. We correctly picked the Azul to take home their sixth Cup, but we also thought it would go into overtime. Beach FC took down the defending champion Richmond Strikers Elite, but couldn’t come close to matching the McLean Azul. The Azul barely edged Loudoun in the waning minutes of the semifinals, but left no question as to who was going to win on Sunday.

U17 Girls
9:30 AM – Field 5
Chantilly Burn   4 : 0   Virginia Rush Nike 93
Virginia Rush Nike was responsible for the biggest upset of the tournament when they dominated the McLean Strikers in the semifinals 3-0, but their Cinderella magic wasn’t enough to take them past the Chantilly Burn. As we predicted the Burn won this game handily and gave us the second big blowout of the finals on the girls side.

U16 Girls
11:45 AM – FIeld 6
CYA Firecats   4 : 2   VSA Heat Blue (OT)
We knew it would be a high-scoring affair, but predicted the VSA Heat Blue to come out on top after their impressive 4-2 win over FC Virginia Hotspur in the semifinals. The defending champions repeated, but it wasn’t without controversy. A VSA player was sent off with 50 minutes left in the match, and with two minutes left in regulation (and the game tied 2-2), there was a possible non-call/missed handling of the ball on the goal line that could have given the Heat an opportunity to score with a PK. Instead, CYA went on to score two goals in overtime and seal the win.

U15 Girls
11:30 AM – Field 5

NVSC Jr. Majestics 95 Gold   0 : 1   Springfield Xtreme White
We didn’t originally have the Majestics in the final, but after their thrashing of FC Virginia in the semifinals, we thought they would be unstoppable and take the championship. Instead, it was Springfield Xtreme White who scored the only goal to take home the State Cup title in a close match.

Semifinals

U16 Boys

Great Falls 94 Elite   0 : 2   PWSI Courage 94 Red
Prediction: Correct. We thought PWSI would be able to handle Great Falls Elite and they did so while shutting them out. After losing in the quarterfinals last year, the Courage will advance to the finals to take on NCSL Division 1 foe and defending State Cup champions Reston.

Reston 94 Knights   4 : 2   Annandale United Force
Prediction: Wrong. Annandale wasn’t able to handle the Reston attack in this NCSL Division 1 matchup, and gave up four goals to the defending State Cup champions. Annandale had looked dominant throughout the tournament up until now, but it will be the Reston Knights taking on PWSI Courage Red in the State Cup finals.
