Development Academy: New York Red Bulls stay atop Northeast Division

By Jimmy LaRoue

With a dominant 8-0 win Sunday over Seacoast United, the New York Red Bulls Under-18 Development Academy team is two points clear of second place BW Gottschee Academy.

Three different Red Bulls players scored twice in the match, which remained scoreless through most of the first half, until a three-goal flurry in the final two minutes set the course.

Amando Moreno opened the scoring with his 44th minute goal, and then the Red Bulls struck twice in the 45th minute on goals from Ismar Tandir and Matthew Miazga.

The Red Bulls continued the onslaught in the second half, as Moreno picked up his second goal in the 51st minute, then Alex Muyl got the first of his two goals in the 64th minute before Tandir scored his second five minutes later. Erik Sa picked up a goal in the 72nd minute. Muyl closed out the scoring 10 minutes later with the Red Bulls’ eighth goal of the day.

The Red Bulls, at 4-0-1, hold down first place in the Northeast Division, with Tandir leading the team with five goals in five matches. Muyl and Sa both have three goals on the season, while Moreno has three assists to go along with his first two goals of the season.

BW Gottschee Academy kept pace with a 3-1 win over South Central Premier, getting two goals from Alhoussain Bah in the 20th and 68th minutes–his third and fourth goals of the season. South Central Premier pulled one back from Salifou Sylla in the 78th minute, but Bradley Nestor capped off the game with an 87th minute goal to provide the final margin.

The club’s U-16s, coming off a Development Academy title in 2011-12, have been just as dominant to start the season, moving to 5-0-0 after a 4-1 win over Seacoast United.

The U-16 Red Bulls survived a second minute goal from Seacoast’s Kevin Herrera to rally for the win. Derrick Etienne tied the match in the 14th minute and Dante Perez added a 39th minute goal for a 2-0 margin at halftime. Second half goals from Alexander Tejera in the 67th minute and Anthony Viteri in the 78th minute sealed the match for the Red Bulls.

D.C. United’s U-16s, meanwhile, moved to 6-0-0 and atop the Atlantic Division after a 1-0 win over Baltimore Bays Chelsea, that despite playing down a man for the final half-hour of the match. United’s U-18s are 4-1-1 and in a three-way tie for first with McLean Youth Soccer and PA Classics after a 3-0 win over Bays.

In other action, Weston FC’s U-18s (4-1-1) stayed in first place in the Southeast Division on points with a 5-0 win over Concorde Fire, with Nicholas Pappacena picking up two goals to give him a team-high eight goals on the season. Diego Aguirre opened the scoring in the 36th minute before Pappacena’s first goal seven minutes later. Three goals in the last 16 minutes of the match sealed things for Weston, including Pappacena’s second goal in the 73rd minute.

It was a week for closer matches, as just seven of 64 academy matches were decided by four or more goals, and just four teams–Albertson SC U-18s, Players Development Academy U-16s, Weston FC U-18s and New York Red Bulls U-18s, scoring five or more goals in their respective weekend games.
