Charles Boehm featured on ‘CBS This Morning’ talking Hope Solo

SoccerWire.com Editor and Senior Writer Charles Boehm appeared on the nationally televised morning news and talk show “CBS This Morning” on Thursday to discuss U.S. Women’s National Team star goalkeeper Hope Solo‘s recent 30-day suspension.

Boehm was featured as an in-studio guest on the taped segment, providing analysis on Solo’s career and history of issues off the field. In the segment he says that although Solo is one of the best players to ever put on a USWNT uniform, her personal struggles continue to be her biggest obstacle.

Boehm has covered soccer for over a decade working primarily with Soccer Wire and MLSSoccer.com, while also freelancing for several other publications. He has covered U.S. Soccer on the men’s and women’s sides extensively over the years, recently traveling to Brazil for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Thursday marked the second time SoccerWire.com has worked with “CBS This Morning” on a segment, and the first time a Soccer Wire staff member has appeared on the show which averages about 3 million viewers.

In her latest off-field incident, Solo reportedly acted belligerent when she and her husband were pulled over by police on Monday night in Manhattan Beach, Calif. Solo’s husband, former NFL tight end Jerramy Stevens, was arrested under suspicion of DUI while Solo was a “major pain” but not arrested according to a report by TMZ.

Stevens was said to have been driving a team van owned by U.S. Soccer, which is likely the main reason behind Solo’s lengthy suspension. The incident occurred during the current USWNT training camp being held in Carson, Calif. As a result of the suspension, Solo has been released from training camp and will miss the USA’s matches in Europe on Feb. 8 in France and Feb. 13 in England, according to a release from U.S. Soccer.

“During our current National Team camp, Hope made a poor decision that has resulted in a negative impact on U.S. Soccer and her teammates,” USWNT head coach Jill Ellis said in the release. “We feel at this time it is best for her to step away from the team.”

Solo posted a message to her Facebook page on Wednesday evening issuing an apology and stating that she respects the U.S. Soccer Federation’s decision to suspend her.
