U17’s Open Winter Showcase with 2-1 Win

December 1, 2017: New York Red Bulls U17 (2) vs. Pateadores U17 (1)

The U17’s kicked off their 2017 Winter Showcase with a quality win against Pateadores, the 1stplace team in the Southwest Division of the West Conference. Scott Taylor got in behind the defense early on, and converted the game’s first goal in the 5th minute. With the wind at their back, the 17’s continued to push forward. Scott Taylor found himself in behind the defense once again, where he was brought down in the box for a penalty. Scott would calmly bury the penalty, putting his team up 2-0 within the first half hour. Pateadores would continue to try and maintain possession, but could not create many chances as NYRB played tremendous team defense all half. Goalkeeper Matt Goodman was called into action only a handful of times, and answered with smart goalkeeping, including one diving save off a free kick. At the break, up 2-0, there was not much to change headed into the second half, but Coach Paul O’Donnell would make two early substitutions in the second half. NYRB would have more of the same in the second period, as Pateadores continued to maintain possession, but without creating many chances. In the 67th minute, the 17’s would go a man up, as a Pateadores midfielder would be sent off with a straight red card for a reckless and late challenge. Pateadores would find a way to score in the 70th minute, but NYRB would stave off any other attacks in the final minutes.

U19’s Roll to 2-0-0 at Winter Showcase with 3-0 Win over Seattle Sounders

December 1, 2017: New York Red Bulls U19 (3) vs. Seattle Sounders U19 (0)

The 19’s paced themselves to a 3-0 win against Seattle Sounders on Saturday afternoon. As the Florida heat began to leave as the sun went down, the 19’s were able to stay hot on the pitch. Forward Preston Popp had the breakthrough in the 34th minute to put RB up 1-0. The first half consisted of some great pressure down the wings and possession in the midfield. Sounders would see off all other attempts from RB in the first half, but Popp’s goal would see his team up 1-0 headed into the break. The second half was more of the same, with RB creating the majority of chances. Seattle rarely tested goalkeeper Sam Ilin. Second half substitute Jonathan Felipe would make an instant impact, scoring the first of his two goals in the 78th minute. He would find the back of the net again in the 87th and see his team to a cool 3-0 win in one of the last games of the day at Premier Sports Campus.

Lineup: Sam Ilin, Jordan Bailon, David Philbin, Ben Bograd, Jared Juleau, John Murphy, Nick Schimbeno, JP Marin, Preston Popp, Ben Mines, Skyler Conway SUBS: Michael Knapp, Pablo Arias, Anthony Rovito, Jonathan Felipe

U17’s Go Down 3-0 to FC Dallas, Lose Unbeaten Streak

December 2, 2017: New York Red Bulls (0) vs. FC Dallas (3)

The U17’s unbeaten run came to an end on Saturday, as they lost 3-0 to a very tough and technically sound FC Dallas team. Dallas remains the only unbeaten academy team at the U17 level after this game, as the two squared off in what was clearly a marquee matchup. With the sidelines full of spectators, the game got off to a nervy start for RB, as Dallas was able to put pressure on them early. A breakthrough would come in the 17th minute to put Dallas up 1-0, but RB was determined to respond. After the 20 minute mark the game had settled in, and possession began to balance out. Unfortunate breakdowns in the back would spell disaster on the day for the 17’s, as a 36th minute goal put them in a hole before the halftime whistle. RB came out in the second half looking more like themselves, creating multiple chances and beginning to play with the swagger they have had all season. Unfortunately the tactics required a lot going forward, and FC Dallas was able to counter with a long ball over the back line, which was finished off and all but buried RB on the day. The final score would end 3-0, but with one more game to play on the weekend, the chance to secure six of nine points is still prevalent.

Lineup: Alex Bobocea, Bryce Lebel (45’ Jose Escandon), Connor Mauer, Sean Ryan (65’ Hamza Shehata), Amir Daley (71’ Joey Zalinsky), Dylan Sullivan, Danny Jara(71’ Matthew Acosta), Chris Taio, John Michael Tolkien, Scott Taylor(71’ Esteban Molina), Balthazar Saunders(71’ Diogo Robelo)

U17’s Bounce Back from Loss, Defeat Whitecaps 3-2

December 4, 2017: New York Red Bulls (3) vs. Vancouver Whitecaps (2)

The U17’s bounced back from a tough loss to FC Dallas with a 3-2 win over Vancouver Whitecaps, highlighted by a Scott Taylor hat trick. Scott would score his first tally of the day in just the 2ndminute, when Jose Escandon would win the ball off of a Whitecaps defender and slot Taylor through. Taylor calmly rounded the keeper and passed the ball into the back of the net. RB would continue the early pressure, which is just the kind of start they needed to rebound from last game. Vancouver grabbed an equalizer in the 22nd minute, but RB would persevere. At halftime, the 17’s had the clearer chances and the upper hand for the entire first half. They looked to continue that momentum into the second. Scott Taylor would again find himself on the score sheet, reclaiming the lead for RB in the 55th minute. Adversity would rear its head in the 74th minute, as Diogo Robelo was sent off for his second yellow card of the match. As the tides began to shift in favor of Vancouver, Hamza Shehata was able to win a ball in the back and dribble down the line before playing a ball in behind to Scott Taylor, who would finish off the hat trick. The game was not over, however, as Vancouver would pull one back in the 85th minute. The final whistle could not have come sooner, allowing RB to breathe a sigh of relief in securing the 3-2 win in their final game of the weekend.

U19’s Come Back to Defeat Vancouver, Stay Undefeated

December 3, 2017: New York Red Bulls (2) vs Vancouver Whitecaps (1)

The U19’s went down early in their final game of the winter showcase, but fought back to win through goals by Ben Mines and JP Marin. They remain the lone undefeated team at the U19 academy level in the country, and in first place in the playoff standings headed into the Spring. The game started off less than ideal, with Vancouver snatching a goal just 15 minutes in. A man was able to slip unmarked to the far post and score a headed goal. RB would recompose and respond in the 32nd minute when Ben Mines ran onto a ball played in behind by John Murphy, and slotted home to knot the score at one a piece. At halftime the statistics were fairly split, with both teams really showing out for their final game in sunny Sarasota. The second half would see a change of goalkeepers, as Sam Ilin relieved Matt Frank of duty.  Both teams came out hungry for the go ahead goal, and RB would find theirs in the 63rd minute, when Ben Mines was played in behind down the wing, and crossed in to find JP Marin for the finish. The 19’s were able to stave off any remaining attempts from Whitecaps, including some quality goalkeeping by Ilin. Congratulations to the 19’s for their accomplishment, and who will look to continue their success into the Spring.

Lineup: Matt Frank (45’ Sam Ilin), Jordan Bailon, Ben Bograd, David Philbin, Jared Juleau, JP Marin (80’ Pablo Arias), John Murphy, Nick Schimbeno, Ben Mines, Jonathan Felipe (75’ Jack Valderrabano), Skyler Conway
